Material composition and manufacture. An Optimum Surfaces panel consists of around 100 % mineral raw materials — feldspar, quartz, clay minerals and pigments — without polymer binders. The mixture is compacted in a press process in a mould, provided with decorated pigment layers for the cloud and vein figure, and then sintered at temperatures above 1,200 °C. In this sintering the mineral particles partly fuse into a closed crystalline mineral structure — the end product is a fully mineral, through-sintered panel without any resin content. From this follow decisive technical advantages over engineered quartz: water absorption below 0.1 %, very high heat resistance (hot pans can be set down directly), full UV resistance and therefore suitability for external use, frost resistance and almost complete acid resistance.
The natural stone model, Taj Mahal Quartzite. Taj Mahal is one of the world's most sought-after warm, creamy quartzites — a metamorphosed sandstone from the quarries in the region of Espírito Santo (Brazil). Unlike marbles, genuine Taj Mahal quartzite is markedly harder (Mohs 7) and more acid-proof, which makes it a premium choice for demanding kitchen worktops. Its name refers to the warm, creamy, almost ivory-coloured character of the famous Indian Taj Mahal mausoleum (which is in fact built from Indian Makrana marble). The quartzite is very popular in the premium market and correspondingly high-priced.
The Taj Mahal 066 variant. The ground tone is a calm, slightly warm-toned cream-beige — not clinically white, not dark beige, but a balanced pale cream note. Across the ground are distributed subtle lighter cloud and veil structures as well as very fine, delicate vein lines in golden-yellow and light brown tones. The appearance is markedly calmer and subtler than that of dramatically veined marble panels (Statuario, Calacatta) — it quotes the typical calm warmth of a high-grade Taj Mahal quartzite, in which the veining stays discreet and the warm ground tone dominates.
Format and thicknesses. Optimum Surfaces usually supplies the panels in large formats of around 320 × 160 cm and 160 × 80 cm in several thicknesses (typically 6, 12 and 20 mm). The 6 mm panel is the first choice for wall claddings, furniture fronts and ventilated facade panels; the 12 and 20 mm panels are standard for kitchen worktops and bar counters (frequently with a mitre edge joint for a visibly thicker appearance).
Thermal and chemical properties. Unlike engineered quartz, there is no polyester resin here — so the typical weaknesses fall away: Taj Mahal 066 is heat-proof (hot pans can be set down directly; the panel is unaffected well beyond 200 °C), almost completely acid-proof (wine, lemon, tomato, vinegar leave no traces) and fully UV-stable (suitable for external use). Frost and weather resistance are given.
