About Padang TG33 Hellgrau

Padang TG33 Hellgrau shows a classic, very uniform fine-grained Chinese granite character with a calm, elegant appearance. The groundmass consists predominantly of pale whitish-grey plagioclase and potassium feldspar crystals with subtle quartz areas, in which black biotite mineral dots are evenly embedded. The ratio of light to dark is roughly 70–80 % pale groundmass to 20–30 % black mineral dots — which produces an overall pale, friendly impression with a classic salt-and-pepper structure. The fine mineral definition is characteristic of Padang granites and distinguishes them from more coarsely structured European granites. Geologically, Padang TG33 Hellgrau is an igneous granodiorite from the southern Chinese quarry area of Jinjiang in the Haicang district of Fujian province. In Germany the stone is listed under the distributor code 'TG33'. Petrographically a very fine-grained granodiorite, which looks paler than a typical granite because of its high plagioclase content. The designation 'Padang' originally derives from the Indonesian port of Padang, but was misleading — the Padang granites come from China, not from Indonesia. This trade designation has taken on a life of its own historically and today stands for the whole family of light grey Chinese granites. Finishes

Padang TG33 Hellgrau is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Honed C120

A matt appearance created by coarse honing with C120 grit — the level surface shows a more restrained colour intensity than polished and can carry visible honing marks. Compared with a polish it is more maintenance-intensive but stylistically calmer; the preferred choice for modern interior architecture with reduced reflection.

Flamed + brushed once

The surface is roughened by heat and brushed once to smooth sharp-edged mineral residues and remove loose material. The feel is somewhat gentler than purely flamed, it remains slip-resistant, and the colour is less intense than polished. The standard choice for outdoor areas, terraces and heavily used floor areas.

Care & fabrication

As a Chinese granodiorite, Padang TG33 Hellgrau is a robust hard stone with low water absorption (0.35 %), full frost and acid resistance and solid mechanical strength. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — the stone is considerably easier to look after and well suited to intensive everyday use.

For interior applications we recommend a silane- or polysiloxane-based impregnation at first installation. On the pale groundmass, impregnation is worthwhile, because pigments can otherwise settle more visibly. On polished surfaces a refresh every 8–10 years is enough; on heavily used floor areas or in exterior applications, check every 3–5 years.

Day-to-day care is done with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually enough. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the impregnation. For kitchen worktops Padang TG33 Hellgrau is solidly suited: cut- and scratch-resistant (Mohs hardness 6–7), insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods, but longer heat exposure above 200 °C should still be avoided), acid-resistant and with good stain repellency. The pale salt-and-pepper surface does, however, show sauce, red wine or turmeric stains more strongly than dark granites — with intensive kitchen use you should react promptly.

For exterior applications Padang TG33 Hellgrau is well suited: the low water absorption and the typical strength of a Chinese granite qualify the stone for exterior façades, paving, pool areas and applications exposed to frost and de-icing salt. For pool surrounds, outdoor terraces and fountain enclosures, a slip-inhibiting textured finish is mandatory — on polished exterior surfaces there is a high risk of slipping when wet. In areas with frequent salt contact we recommend an impregnation refresh every 2–3 years.
