About Pierre Noir

Pierre Noir – French for “black stone” – is a Turkish limestone in a dark anthracite colouring that appears almost black. The colour arises from a high proportion of organic inclusions and fine minerals in the limestone matrix. The surface is finely structured, the veining discreet – the result is a material that at first glance calls black marble to mind, yet possesses the characteristic texture and warmth of a limestone.

As a Turkish limestone, Pierre Noir brings excellent quality and good workability with it. The finishes available from stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down. The colouring makes Pierre Noir particularly effective in high-contrast interiors, where it is used as a counterweight to light walls, white furniture or timber elements.

Pierre Noir is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish for marble and limestone — a glossy surface with the highest possible colour intensity and a pronounced depth to the veining. Depending on the mineral composition, the effect can be matte-gloss in places. Acid-sensitive — wine, lemon and vinegar leave etch marks after prolonged contact.

Care & fabrication

Pierre Noir should be impregnated after laying and cared for regularly with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner. Limestone reacts sensitively to acids. On dark stones, limescale marks and water residues are particularly visible – drying off regularly is recommended. Do not use abrasives.
