Quartzite from Brazil

Super White Calacatta

Super White Calacatta (also Super White Quartzite, White Eternity Quartzite, White Fantasy Quartzite, Fantasy White Quartzite or Super White Dolomite) is a classic Brazilian premium quartzite with a pale cream-white to light grey ground tone and a dramatic grey net-like vein network in the Calacatta manner — the ideal “marble alternative” with the full robustness of a quartzite. High-strength, frost-resistant and fully acid-resistant — used for premium kitchen worktops, prestige wall cladding, feature walls, bathrooms and refined interiors with a classic Calacatta look in low-maintenance hard rock quality.

About Super White Calacatta

Super White Calacatta is one of the most successful marketing concepts on the modern dimension stone market: a high-grade Brazilian quartzite whose slab appearance is virtually indistinguishable from the famous Italian Calacatta marble — the same luminous white ground, the same dramatic grey veining, but with the robustness and acid resistance of a true quartzite. This combination of properties has made the stone a favourite of international high-end kitchen architecture since the 2010s, wherever architects and clients want the iconic Calacatta marble look but wish to avoid the care problems typical of marble (acid sensitivity, etch marks). The marketing name “Super White Calacatta” therefore combines the marketing appeal of the Italian premium marble with the technical reality of a Brazilian quartzite — and the stone is also traded under several parallel names: Super White Quartzite (its primary identity), Super White Dolomite (a classification common on the market but petrographically imprecise), Super White Marble (similarly imprecise), White Eternity Quartzite, White Fantasy Quartzite, Fantasy White Quartzite. Its identity as a Brazilian quartzite is consistently documented on the international market.

Finishes

Super White Calacatta is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Poliert

As a Brazilian quartzite, Super White Calacatta is decidedly easy to look after and exceptionally robust — its quartzitic mineralogy makes the stone insensitive to lemon juice, vinegar, wine, cola and all household acids, which distinguishes it favourably from marbles and limestones. Indoors, warm water with a pH-neutral stone cleaning product is sufficient for daily cleaning; aggressive household cleaners and abrasive sponges are unnecessary. On polished kitchen worktops we recommend sealing after installation and every 2 to 3 years thereafter, with a solvent-based sealer suitable for pale-ground hard rocks, in order to reduce the uptake of oil, grease and intensely coloured foods over the long term. On the pale, luminous white ground tone, strongly colouring substances such as red wine, turmeric, olive oil or dark berries can leave small local discolourations if allowed to act for a prolonged period — proper sealing reduces this risk considerably, and wiping up spills immediately is the best precaution. In the bathroom, water droplets should be squeegeed off after showering to avoid water marks. Outdoors, regular cleaning with clear water and occasionally a soft brush is sufficient; where green growth occurs in shaded positions, proprietary algae and moss cleaners can be used. Hot pans can be set down directly on the worktop — Super White Calacatta is heat-resistant.

Frequently asked questions

Is Super White Calacatta a marble or a quartzite?

Super White Calacatta is unambiguously a quartzite, not a marble — even though the name “Calacatta” refers to the Italian marble classic. In the stone trade it is occasionally also listed as “Super White Marble” or “Super White Dolomite”, which are petrographically imprecise classifications. On the international market the stone is clearly classified as quartzite. Quartzites behave technically like high-grade granites and are insensitive to citric acid, vinegar, wine and cola — a central advantage over the acid-sensitive Italian Calacatta marble.

Why does the stone carry the name “Calacatta”?

The marketing name “Calacatta” refers to the famous Italian Calacatta marble from the Apuan Alps near Carrara — a premium marble with a luminous white ground tone and dramatic grey to golden-yellow veining. Super White Calacatta is virtually indistinguishable from this Italian classic, but is technically a more robust quartzite. This marketing strategy is established on the dimension stone market: Brazilian quartzites with a Calacatta-like appearance are deliberately marketed under the Italian marble name in order to communicate the iconic look together with markedly better technical properties.

What are the advantages over genuine Calacatta marble?

Super White Calacatta offers the iconic Italian Calacatta look (a luminous white ground tone with dramatic grey veining) with markedly better technical properties. The most important advantages over genuine Calacatta marble: full acid resistance against lemon juice, vinegar and wine (marble is acid-sensitive here); greater mechanical robustness and hardness; better wear resistance; unrestricted suitability for intensively used kitchen worktops without concern about etch marks. Genuine Calacatta marble of course remains unsurpassed for its cultural, historical and aesthetic premium quality, but Super White Calacatta is the more robust choice for intensive everyday applications.

Is Super White Calacatta suitable for kitchen worktops?

Outstandingly so — one of the very best choices where a Calacatta look is wanted together with full robustness. The properties typical of quartzite — full acid resistance, high compressive strength, low water absorption, heat resistance and high hardness (Mohs 7) — qualify Super White Calacatta without restriction for intensively used kitchen worktops. Since the 2010s, the luminous white look with its dramatic grey veining has been one of the most frequently specified materials for premium kitchen worktops in international architecture.

Is Super White Calacatta suitable for book-matched installation?

Outstandingly so. When adjacent slabs are mirrored, the fluid, organic veining creates particularly impressive, almost painterly symmetrical large-scale patterns — book-matched installation makes Super White Calacatta one of the most spectacular statement materials for wall cladding, bar back walls and prestige feature walls in the highest level of interior architecture. The layout and slab selection should be viewed before installation.

What slab formats are usual for Super White Calacatta?

Standard large formats from the Brazilian quarries typically lie between 280 × 160 cm and 320 × 200 cm in thicknesses of 2 cm and 3 cm. Special thicknesses (1 cm and 1.5 cm for lightweight wall cladding, 4 cm and above for stairs) can also be sourced through ROSSITTIS. Because of the high slab variation and the premium popularity of the material, viewing the actual slab is particularly important with Super White Calacatta — the specific slab should be assessed before installation.
