Taj Mahal is a Precambrian quartzite quarried near Fortaleza in the Brazilian state of Ceará. The metamorphic rock is 90–95 % quartz and contains 5–10 % sericite, a fine-flaked mica that gives polished surfaces a subtle silky sheen.
Visually, Taj Mahal is defined by its cream-white to ivory ground crossed by warm golden to beige veins. At first glance the irregular, cloudy vein pattern recalls Italian Calacatta marble — with the decisive difference that quartzite is mechanically far more resilient than marble. It is precisely this combination of elegance and robustness that makes Taj Mahal one of the most sought-after natural stones in the premium segment.
The technical values bear this out: with a bulk density of 2,700 kg/m³, a compressive strength of 156.6 MPa and a flexural strength of 15.8 MPa, Taj Mahal sits in the upper performance range for quartzites. Water absorption is just 0.14 %, indicating a very dense structure. The stone is also classified as frost-resistant (tested to UNE EN 1341), which makes external use possible in principle.
Taj Mahal is well suited to kitchen worktops, vanity tops, flooring, wall cladding and stairs. Compared with true marble, the surface is markedly more resistant to scratching and mechanical wear.
One important qualification, stated plainly: despite its quartzite classification, Taj Mahal contains sericite and possibly small carbonate fractions. Care & fabrication
After installation, Taj Mahal should be treated with a high-quality silane-based natural stone sealer. The sealer protects the surface against liquids penetrating and makes daily cleaning considerably easier.
For routine care, a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner with clear water is sufficient. Aggressive cleaners, acidic products (vinegar-based or citrus cleaners) and abrasive pastes should be avoided, as they attack the polish and can damage the sericite content of the stone.
Spills — wine, coffee or fruit juice in particular — should be wiped up promptly to prevent discolouration. On a polished surface, the sealer should be refreshed every 12–18 months depending on how heavily the surface is used. Outdoors, take care to install on a frost-proof build-up with a suitable drainage mortar.
