Indian gabbro (a basic plutonic rock, NOT an acidic granite) from the South Indian plutonic complexes. Mineralogically dominated by pyroxenes, olivine and plagioclase feldspar (the main mafic components). Bulk density approx. 2,900 kg/m³ (considerably higher than acidic granite at ~2,700 kg/m³) — an indication of the gabbro classification. Mohs hardness approx. 6, high compressive strength, low water absorption, fully acid-, heat- and frost-resistant. Listed indiscriminately in the international stone trade as “black granite” — commercially widespread, but petrographically imprecise.

Geologically it is a gabbro — a basic plutonic rock with a high proportion of mafic minerals (pyroxenes, olivine, plagioclase feldspar). Unlike acidic granites (with a high quartz-feldspar proportion), gabbros are considerably darker and heavier by virtue of their mineralogical composition — the bulk density lies at approximately 2,900 kg/m³ (acidic granite: ~2,700 kg/m³). This mineralogy leads to a characteristically monochrome black tonality with a fine granular structure.
In the international stone trade Terra Black, like many other gabbros, is listed indiscriminately as “black granite” — commercially widespread, petrographically imprecise.
In the slab image Terra Black shows a deep black, almost monochrome base tone with a very fine mineral structure. The surface appears calm and even — no dramatic vein marking, no powerful mineral accents, but a controlled, elegant depth of black. On close inspection, fine crystalline mineral points are discernible, which lend the polished surface a subtle reflection of light.
For the application that means: Terra Black is a decidedly versatile choice for kitchen worktops, islands, vanity tops, wall claddings, floor and wall tiles, stairs, window sills, façade elements and all applications in which a calm, elegant dark solid-colour dimension stone is required. The high density and robustness make the stone the logical choice for heavily loaded external applications.
Technically, Terra Black is a classic high-performance dimension stone with a Mohs hardness of around 6, complete acid resistance, heat resistance, frost resistance and very low water absorption. The high density additionally lends it particular thermal stability.

Polished
Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.
Care & fabrication
Terra Black is a dense gabbro with high compressive strength, low water absorption and complete acid, heat and frost resistance.
Daily cleaning: soft microfibre cloth, warm water and a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner. Polish dry — otherwise limescale films are visible on the dark tonality.
Do not use: concentrated acids, steel wool.
Impregnation: on polished surfaces, recommended every 18–36 months depending on loading. Prevents oil saturation marks on the dark tonality.
Kitchen worktop: hot pans can be set down directly, steel knives leave no scratches.
Outdoors: frost-suitable with professional installation including drainage.
Repair: scratches in the polish can be evened out by professional re-polishing.
