About Travertin Rosso Persia

Travertin Rosso Persia lives from a warm red material effect that marks a room immediately. The ground tone moves between a strong rust red and a luminous orange red, run through by fine horizontal bands and the characteristic travertine pores. The parallel banded structures are the traces of the original sedimentation from mineral-rich hot spring waters in the volcanically shaped regions of Iran. It is precisely this expressive, almost fiery material effect that makes the stone interesting for façade cladding, wall claddings, floor areas, pool surrounds, stairs and Mediterranean-inspired interior fit-outs — wherever a warm red statement look is called for.

Geologically, Travertin Rosso Persia is a travertine from the Azarshar quarrying area south of Tabriz in the province of East Azerbaijan (Azarbaijan-e Sharqi) in north-western Iran. The region is among the classic Iranian travertine deposits and has been producing high-quality red and coloured travertines for decades. Travertines form from mineral-rich spring water that precipitates calcium carbonate — the warm red colouring of Rosso Persia derives from iron oxide-rich admixtures, and the characteristic pores are traces of water bubbles and plant remains during deposition. In the international market the material also runs under the trade names Travertino Rosso Persia, Azarshar Red, Rosso Persiano, Persian Red Travertine and Ahura Mazda.

Technically Travertin Rosso Persia behaves like a classic travertine: bulk density 2,670 kg/m³, compressive strength 50.6 MPa, water absorption around 1.65 %. The compressive strength is moderate for a travertine — the material is well suited to wall and exterior applications, less so to heavily used floor areas with high point loads. Frost resistance is very good, as is typical for the travertines of this volcanic region. Chemically the stone remains acid-sensitive (a carbonate rock): wine, lemon juice, vinegar or acidic sanitary cleaners leave etch marks on the material surface. In fabrication, the natural cavities are usually filled with transparent or colour-matched resin or cement mortar; unfilled grades with open pores are available as the rustic version.

Finishes

Travertin Rosso Persia is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Filled + polished

Natural pores and cavities are filled with a special filler compound and thus closed — the surface is then polished. The highest possible colour intensity and gloss; depending on the mineral composition, the material can at most be polished to a semi-gloss. Easier to care for than the unfilled variant.

Care & fabrication

As a carbonate travertine, Travertin Rosso Persia is acid-sensitive. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave etch marks on the material surface — visible as dull shadows or a loss of gloss.

For all applications a silane- or polysiloxane-based impregnation is mandatory. With travertine it is especially important because of the characteristic cavities and the higher water absorption of around 1.65 % — stains can otherwise penetrate deeply. On polished surfaces we recommend refreshing the impregnation every 1-2 years, and more frequently on exterior surfaces.

Day-to-day care is done with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth or mop. Avoid vinegar-based cleaners, cement haze removers, acidic sanitary cleaners and strongly alkaline products. Wine, coffee, oil, lemon juice or cosmetic products should not be left standing on the surface for long.

For kitchen worktops Travertin Rosso Persia is suitable only with reservations. The material is classically used rather for façades, wall claddings, pool surrounds and exterior areas. Anyone who wants its warm red material character in the kitchen should expect a patina or choose an easier-care quartzite or granite alternative.

With reservations.
