Verde Nuvolato is a Chinese conglomerate (metamorphosed gravel rock) from the eastern Chinese building stone provinces.
Geologically it is a conglomerate — a clastic sedimentary rock made of rounded gravel clasts cemented in a mineral matrix. In the case of Verde Nuvolato, the original conglomerate was tectonically loaded under mild to moderate metamorphosis and partly recrystallised, which explains today's stable structure and the typical hard stone performance. The intensely dark green colouring of the matrix arises from chlorite- and epidote-rich mineral portions, typical of lightly metamorphosed sediments with basaltic gravel components.
In the slab picture, Verde Nuvolato shows a dramatic composition: a dark deep green to black-green ground tone (the metamorphosed conglomerate matrix), shot through with powerfully animated creamy white, light grey creamy and in places yellowish pebble clasts of varying size — from a few millimetres to several centimetres in diameter. The clasts are irregularly distributed, without dramatic bedding, and create the characteristic “nuvolato” picture (“cloudy” in Italian). In places the pale clasts condense into powerful nodal zones, then they thin out and the dark green matrix dominates again. An exceptionally lively, almost geologically narrative material story.
In international trade Verde Nuvolato is carried as “granite” or “green granite” — commercially widespread, but petrographically more precisely a metamorphosed conglomerate. This classification in the granite class is established in the building stone trade, because Verde Nuvolato corresponds to the granite family in its material properties (Mohs hardness ~6, compressive strength, acid resistance, frost resistance).
For use this means: Verde Nuvolato is a decidedly powerful choice for statement wall claddings, bar counters, fireplace surrounds, vanity tops, floor areas, stairs, exterior façades and prestige interior and exterior architecture — with full hard stone robustness. Combined with warm timber, brass, bronze and muted earth tones, the material develops an atmospherically luxurious effect. Unlike green marbles such as Verde Alpi (Mohs hardness 3, acid-sensitive), Verde Nuvolato offers full everyday suitability for kitchen worktops and exterior applications.
Technically Verde Nuvolato shows the typical values of a metamorphosed conglomerate with hard stone characteristics: bulk density around 2,700 kg/m³, high compressive strength, low water absorption, complete acid resistance, heat resistance and frost resistance. Mohs hardness around 6 — steel knives leave no scratches, wine and lemon no etch marks, hot pans can be set down directly.

Important note on identification: several similarly named materials exist in international trade — Italian and Swiss metabasites (e.g. from Zalende/Grisons) are in part also referred to as “Verde Nuvolato” or “Nuvolato Verde”, but are petrographically and geographically different stones. At ROSSITTIS it is specifically the Chinese conglomerate.
For anyone comparing Verde Nuvolato with other materials: stylistically close are Chinese and Italian green conglomerates and metabasites, as well as other veined hard stones with a pebble character. Anyone who needs a calm solid-colour look should reach for monochrome natural materials. But anyone who values the expressively cloudy conglomerate character of a metamorphosed Chinese gravel rock will find in Verde Nuvolato a stone of great character.
