Marinace Rosso

Marinace Rosso is an exceptionally expressive Brazilian metamorphic conglomerate from the Fazenda Merces quarry area in Novo Horizonte (Bahia) — a Precambrian coarse clastic rock with a dense packing of rounded pebble clasts in terracotta red, burgundy, cream, white marble and isolated dark tones, embedded in a warm rosé-grey matrix. Internationally also traded as Rosso Marinace and Rhodium Bahia; used for maximally expressive statement bar counters, designer kitchen islands, bookmatched wall claddings, fireplace surrounds, vanity tops and unique artistic settings with the highest recognition value.

Marinace Rosso is petrographically a Precambrian metamorphic conglomerate (a coarse clastic rock, DNSA 5470) — a sedimentary natural stone of rounded pebble clasts in a fine-grained matrix, consolidated by metamorphosis. In the international trade the material is listed within the hard rock family and classified as “granite”, because in fabrication and mechanical properties it is handled like a classic hard stone. About Marinace Rosso

Marinace Rosso is one of the most visually unmistakable materials in the worldwide natural stone range. The slab shows a dense packing of rounded pebble clasts in varying sizes (from a few millimetres to several centimetres across) and contrasting colours — dominant are strong terracotta-red to burgundy clasts, complemented by luminous white marble or quartz clasts, creamy beige sandstone clasts, occasional black igneous clasts and subtle greenish accents. The clasts are embedded in a warm rosé-grey fine-grained matrix that holds the whole composite together. The effect is astonishingly like natural gravel from a streambed cast into coloured concrete — but it came about naturally over hundreds of millions of years through sedimentation, consolidation and subsequent metamorphism. On a polished surface the stone develops an exceptional depth — the individual clasts show their own mineral structure (some with fine veining, others with a crystalline gleam, some with grained structures) and the matrix shimmers silkily in the background. Every slab is a unique piece — with Marinace Rosso it is particularly worth making the selection from actual slabs, because the clast distribution varies strongly from block to block and every slab yields a different 'geological still life'.

Geologically, Marinace Rosso is a Precambrian metamorphic conglomerate (coarse clastic rock) — a clastic sedimentary rock that originally formed in a streambed or an alluvial fan. The individual clasts were originally rolled stones of various origins (granite, quartzite, marble, sandstone), gathered by flowing water in the Precambrian river system, rounded and finally consolidated in a mineral matrix. The sediment was then metamorphically overprinted by pressure and heat, which welded clasts and matrix together permanently. The quarry area lies at Fazenda Merces near Novo Horizonte in the Brazilian state of Bahia. The DNSA dimension stone reference lists the material under the identifier 5470 with the trade name Rosso Marinace and the alias Rhodium Bahia. In international trade the designations Conglomerate Brazil, Bahia Conglomerate and Brecciated Bahia are also in circulation.

Technically Marinace Rosso shows solid values for a conglomerate: bulk density 2,660 kg/m³, compressive strength 182 MPa, flexural strength 10.5 MPa, water absorption 0.14 %, Mohs hardness about 6–7 (varying with the mineralogy of the clasts). According to DNSA the stone is expressly frost-resistant and acid-resistant — astonishing given the heterogeneous mineral composition with partly calcitic clasts, but the metamorphic overprinting has silicified the calcitic areas or left them so small that they trigger no acid reactivity. The polished surface is durable outdoors as well (polish durable outdoors). This makes Marinace Rosso fully everyday-capable for demanding interior and exterior applications, including exterior façades with the polish permanently retained.

Compared with other conglomerate natural stones traded worldwide, such as Multicolor Rosso (a different Brazilian conglomerate type), Bianco Macubas (a pale marble conglomerate) or the classic Rosso Verona (an Italian sedimentary marble with a red tone but no conglomerate structure), Marinace Rosso is unique in its expressive clast packing and colour intensity. Finishes

Marinace Rosso is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Care & fabrication

As a Brazilian metamorphic conglomerate, Marinace Rosso is a robust hard stone with low water absorption (0.14 %), confirmed frost and acid resistance (DNSA) and solid compressive and flexural strength. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — the stone is considerably easier to look after and well suited to intensive everyday use.

For interior applications we recommend a silane- or polysiloxane-based impregnation at first installation. On polished surfaces, depending on use, a refresh every 5–8 years is enough; on heavily used kitchen worktops or bar counters, check every 2–3 years. The impregnation protects against deep penetration of oil, grease and pigments — with the heterogeneous clast-and-matrix structure, discolouration can otherwise show up particularly on the lighter white marble or quartz clasts and on the matrix.

Day-to-day care is done with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually enough. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic (acid resistance confirmed by DNSA), but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the impregnation. For kitchen worktops and bar counters Marinace Rosso is well suited: cut-, scratch- and heat-resistant (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods, but longer heat exposure above 200 °C should still be avoided), acid-resistant and with good stain repellency. The expressive clast structure conceals small marks of use remarkably well. When choosing the slab edge, bear in mind that with very sharp internal corners (for instance at cut-outs for basins) the heterogeneous clast structure can lead to micro chipping — a slight chamfer or rounding of the internal edges is more sensible here than a classic right-angled edge.

For large-area bookmatch installations, manual slab selection on site at the importer is particularly worthwhile — the clast distribution has to harmonise from slab to slab so that the mirrored large-scale motif reads coherently.
