About Baltic Braun

Baltic Brown is instantly recognisable. The material shows a dark brown to black ground with striking round brown crystals that sit on the surface as though embedded. It is precisely this rapakivi appearance that makes the stone so characteristic and explains why Baltic Brown has been a classic for kitchens, stairs, floor surfaces, façades and solid dimension stone components for years. Compared with Tan Brown or Brown Antique it reads as less metallic and less cloudy, but markedly more ordered and unmistakable in its grain pattern.

The stone comes from Finland, from the Luumäki and Ylämaa area. Petrographically it is a rapakivi granite, that is, a particular granite variant with the typical rounded feldspar crystals. In the market, however, what counts above all is its role as a brown granite classic for internal and external use. Against reddish Finnish granites such as Rosso Balmoral, Baltic Brown is darker and earthier; against black granites, warmer and more striking.

Finishes

Baltic Braun is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Honed C120

A matt appearance created by coarse honing with C120 grit — the level surface shows a more restrained colour intensity than polished and can carry visible honing marks. Compared with a polish it is more maintenance-intensive but stylistically calmer; the preferred choice for modern interior architecture with reduced reflection.

Flamed + brushed once

The surface is roughened by heat and brushed once to smooth sharp-edged mineral residues and remove loose material. The feel is somewhat gentler than purely flamed, it remains slip-resistant, and the colour is less intense than polished. The standard choice for outdoor areas, terraces and heavily used floor areas.

Care & fabrication

Baltic Brown should be sealed after installation, particularly on kitchen worktops and dark floor surfaces. Water absorption of 0.13 % is low, but a sealer nonetheless makes cleaning and care noticeably easier.

For cleaning and care, pH-neutral natural stone cleaners and a soft cloth are sufficient. On polished surfaces, water, limescale and grease residues should not be allowed to dry on.

Avoid abrasive pads and aggressive specialist cleaners not approved for natural stone. Oil, coffee and coloured foods should be removed promptly from worktops.

Outdoors, good drainage, regular cleaning and the appropriate finish are important. Technically the stone is robust, but visually, neglected textured surfaces quickly lose their clarity.
