Brown Pearl

Geologically, Brown Pearl is a Precambrian syenite from the Brazilian plutonic complex between the states of São Paulo (the Pasto Velho/Bocaina region) and Minas Gerais (the Caldas region). Petrographically, syenite is a plutonic igneous rock consisting predominantly of potassium feldspar and plagioclase feldspar with subordinate quartz content — a rare rock class relatively seldom quarried commercially as a building stone. Syenite is related to granite, but typically has less quartz and a somewhat lower compressive strength (114.8 MPa in Brown Pearl versus ~170 MPa in typical granites — which is consistent with syenite mineralogy in the technical values). Several synonyms circulate in international trade: Sepia Brown (referring to the warm brown sepia tone), Brown Pearl Granite (with the granite trade convention) and occasionally Bronze Pearl. In the trade the stone is traditionally carried as a 'granite', which is not entirely correct petrographically — at ROSSITTIS we classify Brown Pearl, as is customary in the trade, within the granite family in accordance with the widespread trade convention for syenites and similar hard igneous rocks.

Technically, Brown Pearl shows solid values: bulk density 2,798 kg/m³ (very high — typical of syenites), compressive strength 114.8 MPa, flexural strength 15.30 MPa, water absorption 0.39 % (low), Mohs hardness 6 (typical of plagioclase-dominated hard rocks). Full acid resistance as a silicate rock is confirmed — wine, lemon juice, vinegar or bathroom cleaners leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone. Brown Pearl is therefore fully fit for everyday use in demanding interior applications including intensively used designer kitchen worktops and statement wall cladding.

Compared with other Pearl hard rocks and brown statement grades, Brown Pearl is a special choice with its characteristically warm bronze schiller effect: Blue Pearl Royal (a Norwegian anorthosite from Larvik with blue-turquoise labradorescence) is the lighter blue sister grade; Angola Moon Luanda (an Angolan anorthosite) is a darker blue; Mahogany India (a warm granite from Tamil Nadu) is more even, without a schiller effect; Tan Brown (an Indian granite) is more evenly patterned. Among the bronze-brown statement hard rocks, Brown Pearl is one of the most expressive choices, with its characteristically bronze Pearl feel.
