About Himalaya Blue
Himalaya Blue is one of the best-known and most widely used Indian hard stones on the international dimension stone market. The stone is extracted in the quarry district around the Koppal and Bellary districts in the south Indian state of Karnataka — one of the world's most important Indian dimension stone provinces, which has supplied European and North American markets with high-quality Indian granite and migmatite selections for decades. The marketing name “Himalaya Blue” is a commercial designation that markets the stone's warm red-brown and grey tonalities under an association-rich marketing name — the reference to the Himalaya mountains is purely associative; the stone does not come from the Himalaya but from southern India (Karnataka). Himalaya Blue has for decades been among the standard hard stones frequently installed in Germany and Central Europe. On the international market the stone is listed under several parallel trade names: Himalaya Blue, Himalayan Blue Granite, Koppal Blue Granite and Himalaya Brown Granite.
Geologically it is a Precambrian migmatite from the Indian shield — a metamorphic rock formed by the partial melting of Precambrian basement under high pressure and high temperature and its subsequent re-consolidation. Petrographically it is precisely a migmatite (metamorphic) — in the stone trade the stone is traditionally listed as a granite, a convention established on the international market for high-strength exotic hard stones. Migmatites show alternating granite-like and metamorphic banding — in Himalaya Blue these appear as irregularly clouded structures with warm red-brown main areas, crossed by dark grey-anthracite biotite bands and subtle silvery grey quartz-feldspar speckles. The warm red-brown tonality results from iron-oxide-bearing feldspar components, the darker bands from biotite- and amphibole-rich components.

The stone is frost- and acid-resistant, which qualifies it without restriction for all demanding interior and exterior applications including kitchen worktops, heavily walked floor areas, paving and façade claddings. Care & fabrication
As an Indian migmatite from the granite family, Himalaya Blue is decidedly easy to maintain. Indoors, warm water with a pH-neutral stone cleaning agent is enough for daily cleaning; aggressive household cleaners, citric-acid-based descalers and abrasive sponges are unnecessary and should be avoided. On polished kitchen worktops, a sealer with a solvent-based product suitable for warm-toned hard stones is advisable after installation and every 2 to 3 years thereafter, in order to reduce the uptake of oil, grease and intensely coloured foods over the long term. With the warm red-brown tonality, light pigment marks are less visible than on purely light stones — the robustness typical of granite makes the stone an easy-care choice for intensive everyday applications. Soiling should be taken up promptly, ideally within a few hours. Outdoors, regular cleaning with clear water and occasionally a soft brush is enough; where green growth appears in shaded locations, commercially available algae and moss cleaners can be used. Hot pots can be set down directly on the worktop — Himalaya Blue is heat-resistant. De-icing salt in winter does the stone no harm and can be used.
