About Mahogany India

Mahogany India shows an exceptionally dense, warm mahogany-brown granite character with a classic, timeless quality. The ground mass consists predominantly of deep mahogany-brown to red-brown potassium feldspar crystals with a warm, saturated tone — the characteristic “mahogany” shade that gave the stone its name and that inspired the comparison with the American Dakota Mahogany from South Dakota. Distributed evenly through the ground mass are black biotite dots and hornblende accents, isolated creamy pink plagioclase crystals as well as subtle greenish-grey mineral portions (quartz, chlorite). The mineral structure is isotropic (non-directional) — no pronounced vein courses, no layering, no migmatitic band pattern. The overall effect is calm, warm and powerful — the stone shows a block-to-block consistency reliable for planning, which makes it particularly attractive for large-area projects. Geologically, Mahogany India is an igneous plutonic rock from the granite provinces of Tamil Nadu, India — one of the world's most significant granite export regions. Tamil Nadu alone produces over 50 % of the coloured granites traded worldwide and is home to numerous classic building stone grades. Some sources also place the material in the neighbouring regions of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka — all three southern Indian states belong to the same large Precambrian granite complex. Several synonyms circulate in international trade: Indian Mahogany Granite, Indian New Mahogany, Indian Dakota Mahogany (in allusion to the American Dakota Mahogany from South Dakota), India New Mahogany and Mega Granite. Technically, Mahogany India shows exceptionally strong values: bulk density 2,690 kg/m³, compressive strength 176.9 MPa, water absorption only 0.03 % (extremely low — one of the densest commercially traded granites worldwide), Mohs hardness 6.5–7. The extremely low water absorption is a particular property that qualifies Mahogany India for the most demanding exterior applications: pool areas, rain-exposed façades, paving with freeze/de-icing salt loading — the stone takes up practically no water and is therefore stable over the long term without significant frost damage. Full acid resistance as a silicate rock is confirmed — wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or limescale removers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone.

Compared with the American Mahogany Dakota (a granite from the Black Hills of South Dakota with a coarser-grained structure and somewhat paler tones), Mahogany India is denser, more even and warmer — the grain is finer, the mahogany tone more saturated. Compared with other warm Indian classics such as Imperial Red (a more powerful red, with larger black dots), Tan Brown (more evenly patterned in black and brown) or Indian Brown (warmer and more brownish), Mahogany India brings the most balanced warm red-brown composition with a refined mahogany character. Compared with warm Brazilian grades such as Café Imperial (with softer mineral waves) or Marrom Imperial (with livelier movement), Mahogany India is calmer and more reliable in planning terms. Finishes

Mahogany India is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Care & fabrication

As a dense Indian granite, Mahogany India is an exceptionally robust hard stone with extremely low water absorption (0.03 %), full acid resistance and very high compressive strength. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or limescale removers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — the stone is markedly easier to care for and ideally suited to intensive everyday use.

For interior applications we recommend a light impregnation on a silane or polysiloxane basis at first installation. With the exceptionally low water absorption of 0.03 %, Mahogany India is practically non-absorbent — the impregnation serves rather as additional insurance against grease rings than as necessary protection. On polished surfaces a refresh every 8–10 years is enough; on heavily used kitchen worktops or exterior applications, check every 3–5 years.

Daily care is done with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually enough. Acidic cleaners are fundamentally unproblematic (acid resistance as a silicate rock), but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the impregnation. For kitchen worktops, Mahogany India is outstandingly suited: resistant to cuts and scratches, insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods; nevertheless avoid longer heat exposure above 200 °C), acid-resistant and with excellent stain repellency thanks to the extremely low water absorption. The warm mahogany tone conceals small traces of use astonishingly well — crumbs, flour and food residues are less visible than on pale granite grades. For exterior applications, Mahogany India is particularly well qualified: the extremely low water absorption (0.03 %) makes the stone one of the best choices for exterior façades in locations with heavy exposure to the weather, pool areas, high-frequency public floor areas and all applications with freeze/de-icing salt loading. For pool surrounds, exterior terraces and fountain surrounds a slip-resistant textured finish is obligatory — on smooth exterior surfaces there is a high risk of slipping when wet. In areas with frequent salt contact (de-icing salt, pool chlorine), refreshing the impregnation every 3–5 years is entirely sufficient (with dense stones with low water absorption this is needed less often than with more porous materials). The dark warm ground tone stores solar energy in hot climate zones — for pool areas in the south, combine with locally cooled irrigation where appropriate.
