About Mahogany Schweden

Mahogany Schweden shows a classic medium- to coarse-grained Swedish granite character with a warm Scandinavian appearance. The groundmass consists predominantly of warm mahogany-brown to red-brown potassium feldspar crystals with the rich colouring typical of Scandinavian granites. Embedded in the warm groundmass are clear, lighter quartz crystals in various shades of grey as well as strong black biotite mineral points, which lend the slab surface a balanced, lively mineral character. Occasionally, subtle creamy white plagioclase zones set additional accents of light. The mineral structure is isotropic (without direction) — no pronounced veining, no layering. The ratio of light to dark lies at around 60–70 % warm red-brown groundmass to 30–40 % grey-black mineral points — producing an overall warm, friendly impression with a clearly legible crystalline structure. On a polished surface the stone develops a rich sense of depth — the warm mahogany colouring intensifies, the grey quartz crystals shimmer and the biotite accents stand out plastically. On a satin-honed surface (the standard delivery from ROSSITTIS) the stone appears calmer and matt with a pleasantly silky character.

Geologically, Mahogany Schweden is a Precambrian granite from the Småland granite province in the south of Sweden. The quarries lie in the Tribbhult and Flivik quarrying area north of the port town of Oskarshamn on the Baltic coast. The Småland granites belong to the Scandinavian “Trans-Scandinavian Igneous Belt” (TIB), one of the most significant granite provinces in Europe, which has supplied classic structural granites worldwide for decades. The Swedish origin is documented with complete technical data. Several synonyms circulate in international trade: Swedish Mahogany Granite (the English trade name), Tribbhult Mahogany Granite, Flivik Mahogany Granite, Flivik Granit (shortened after the specific quarry), Arvidsmäla Mahogany Granite, Royal Mahogany Granite and Småland Mahogany.

Technically, Mahogany Schweden shows exceptionally strong values: bulk density 2,740–2,780 kg/m³ (somewhat higher than a typical granite; the Swedish Småland granites are among the densest European hard stones), compressive strength 188.4–197 MPa (very high), flexural strength 18.1–19.1 MPa (exceptional), water absorption of only 0.1 % (extremely low), abrasion resistance 5.1 cm³/50cm² according to Böhme (very hard), Mohs hardness 6.5–7. Full frost and acid resistance is confirmed for it as a silicate rock — wine, lemon juice, vinegar or sanitary cleaners leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone. Mahogany Schweden is therefore fully suited to everyday use in the most demanding interior and exterior applications — the stone is among the mechanically strongest warm red-brown granites in Europe.

In direct comparison with other warm mahogany sortings, Mahogany Schweden is a clear European alternative: Mahogany Dakota (USA, South Dakota) is coarser-grained with characteristic bluish-grey quartz crystals and has a classic American dimension stone character. Mahogany India (Tamil Nadu, India) is finer-grained, more uniform and richer in its mahogany colouring with a lower water absorption (0.03 % vs. 0.1 %). Mahogany Schweden is denser and mechanically stronger (the highest flexural strength of the three: 18–19 MPa) and brings the typical Scandinavian granite character with a clear delimitation of quartz and feldspar minerals. Set against other classic Scandinavian granites such as Rosso Balmoral (a Finnish rapakivi granite with larger feldspar eyes), Vanga Red (a Swedish granite, similarly from Småland but a stronger red) or Baltic Brown (a Finnish granite with a characteristic eye structure), Mahogany Schweden brings the most balanced warm red-brown composition with a high block-to-block consistency. Finishes

Mahogany Schweden is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Satin-honed

The satin surface is created by brushing, which selectively removes softer minerals and gives the surface a slight depth. A matte appearance with subtle light reflection and a warm feel to the touch. Easy to maintain, insensitive to scratches and suited to everyday use — a popular alternative to a polish in modern kitchens and living spaces.

Care & fabrication

As a Swedish Precambrian granite, Mahogany Schweden is an exceptionally robust hard stone with extremely low water absorption (0.1 %), full frost and acid resistance and very high compressive and flexural strength. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — the stone is considerably easier to care for and ideally suited to intensive everyday use.

For interior applications we recommend a light impregnation on a silane or polysiloxane basis at first installation. With its low water absorption of 0.1 %, Mahogany Schweden is practically non-absorbent — the impregnation serves more as additional insurance against grease rings than as necessary protection. Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually sufficient. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic (acid resistance as a silicate rock), but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the impregnation. For kitchen worktops, Mahogany Schweden is outstandingly suited: exceptionally cut- and scratch-resistant, insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods; nevertheless avoid longer heat exposure above 250 °C), acid-resistant and with excellent stain repellency thanks to its low water absorption. The warm mahogany colouring conceals small traces of use astonishingly well. The high flexural strength (18–19 MPa) makes the stone particularly suitable for long slab overhangs on kitchen islands or bar counters.

For external applications, Mahogany Schweden is particularly well qualified: the low water absorption (0.1 %), the high strength and the DIN/EN-confirmed frost resistance make the stone the first choice for demanding external façades in heavily weather-exposed locations, paving in Scandinavian climates, pool areas and applications with freeze-thaw and de-icing salt loading. In areas with frequent salt contact (road salt, pool chlorine), an impregnation refreshment every 3–5 years is entirely sufficient (needed less frequently with dense stones of low water absorption than with more porous materials). Scandinavian granites are, through their exceptional density, particularly tolerant of road salt — an essential advantage in Nordic climate zones.
