Mahogany Dakota Amerika shows the classic, medium- to coarse-grained granite structure that is characteristic of North American Precambrian building granites. The groundmass consists predominantly of warm mahogany-brown to red-brown potassium feldspar crystals with clearly visible mineral boundaries. Embedded in the warm groundmass are striking lighter bluish grey to violet-grey quartz crystals (typical of the Dakota granites — the characteristic 'smoky quartz' effect) as well as black biotite and hornblende mineral points. The mineral structure is isotropic (without direction) — no pronounced veining, no layering. The effect is classic, powerful and even — an authentic American dimension-stone classic with over a hundred years of proving in the market. On a polished surface the stone develops a rich depth — the warm mahogany shade of the feldspars intensifies, the quartz crystals shimmer bluish violet and the biotite accents stand out in relief.

Geologically, Mahogany Dakota Amerika is a Precambrian granite (around 1.7 billion years old) from the Milbank granite complex in Brown County, South Dakota — one of the oldest and most enduring granite provinces in the USA. The quarries lie near the town of Milbank in the far north-east of South Dakota, on the border with Minnesota. Finishes

Mahogany Dakota Amerika is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Care & fabrication

As an American Precambrian granite, Mahogany Dakota Amerika is a robust hard rock with low water absorption (0.10–0.159 %), full frost and acid resistance and very high compressive strength. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — the stone is markedly easier to care for and excellently suited to intensive everyday use.

For internal applications we recommend a light silane or polysiloxane-based sealer at first installation. On polished surfaces a refresh every 8–10 years is sufficient; on heavily used kitchen worktops or external applications, check every 3–5 years. A sealer protects against deep penetration of oil, grease and pigments — otherwise discolouration can show up on the heterogeneous, coarse-grained mineral structure, particularly on the lighter quartz crystals.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually sufficient. Acidic cleaners are fundamentally unproblematic (acid resistance as a silicate rock), but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the sealer. For kitchen worktops, Mahogany Dakota Amerika is well suited: cut- and scratch-resistant, insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods, but prolonged heat exposure above 200 °C should nevertheless be avoided), acid-resistant and with very good stain repellency thanks to its low water absorption. The warm mahogany shade with the coarse-grained classic mineral structure conceals small traces of use astonishingly well. With the coarser-grained structure, the slab edge deserves particular attention — a slight chamfer or edge rounding makes more sense than very sharp right-angled edges, because the individual mineral crystals can break out during fine edge work.

For external applications, Mahogany Dakota Amerika is outstandingly suited — the stone has proved itself over decades on American buildings, public buildings and memorials. The low water absorption and the frost resistance qualify the stone for demanding external façades, paving, memorials, gravestones and structural applications with high exposure to the weather. For pool surrounds, external terraces and fountain surrounds, a slip-inhibiting textured finish is obligatory — on smooth external surfaces there is a high risk of slipping when wet. In areas with frequent salt contact (de-icing salt, pool chlorine) we recommend an additional sealer refresh every 2–3 years.
