Marinace Gold is a Precambrian conglomerate natural stone from Salinas in Minas Gerais, Brazil — a unique “petrified river gravel” of rounded pebbles in creamy pink, golden yellow and grey, embedded in an anthracite-black groundmass. Internationally also listed as Golden Marinace Granite, Giallo Marinace, Gold Mosaic Granite, Gold Pebble Granite and Pietra di Fiume; used for expressive statement wall surfaces, bar counters, fireplace surrounds and prestige internal applications with an artistic ambition.

Petrographically, Marinace Gold is a Precambrian conglomerate (a sedimentary coarse clastic rock of water-rounded river pebbles in a fine-grained binder matrix), but in the trade it is listed as a granite.

About Marinace Gold

Marinace Gold lives from an absolutely unique material effect — the stone looks like petrified river gravel or a frozen mosaic of water-rounded pebbles. The defining feature is the clearly recognisable oval to round river pebbles, embedded in varying sizes (from a few millimetres to several centimetres) in a dark anthracite-black groundmass. These pebbles show a warm colour palette: creamy pink granite clasts as pronounced accents, golden yellow and honey-brown sandstone pebbles (the “gold” element that gives the stone its name), light grey and mid-grey quartzite pieces as well as creamy white and beige granite clasts. Isolated almost black pebbles set deep accents. The black binding matrix flows around every single pebble and gives the slab surface an unusual 3D effect — as though a piece of a Stone Age river bed had frozen into a natural stone slab. On a polished surface the stone develops a dramatically expressive character with colourful accents — a material that does not polarise but fascinates immediately. Marinace Gold is one of the most unusual and most expressive natural stones in the world.

Geologically, Marinace Gold is a Precambrian conglomerate natural stone (coarse clastic rock) from the quarries around Salinas in the Brazilian state of Minas Gerais. Conglomerates form when water-rounded river pebbles are heaped up by water or glacial transport and cemented under pressure with fine sand and binding material into solid rock. The various pebbles in Marinace Gold derive from different parent rocks — granitic, sandstone-like and quartzitic clasts — all of which were heaped up in a former river bed hundreds of millions of years ago before consolidating into a solid conglomerate under tectonic load. The black groundmass derives from binder layers containing iron oxide and manganese between the pebbles. In international trade the material runs under several synonyms: Marinace Gold, Golden Marinace Granite, Gold Marinace Granite, Marinace Golden Granite, Giallo Marinace Granite, Gold Mosaic Granite, Golden Mosaic Granite, Black Mosaic Gold Granite, Gold Pebble Granite, Marinaci Granite and Pietra di Fiume (Italian for “river stone”). At ROSSITTIS we classify Marinace Gold as a granite, as is customary in the trade. Important for identification: there is a whole Marinace family with different colour variants, all of which are conglomerates but come from different quarries — Verde Marinace and Marinace Verde (DNSA #4677, Bahia, greenish variant), Nero Marinace (DNSA #5561, Bahia, black variant) and Rosso Marinace (DNSA #5470, Bahia, red variant). The gold variant comes from Minas Gerais (Salinas), while the other Marinace variants come from Bahia.

Technically, Marinace Gold shows the values of a compact Brazilian conglomerate. Because of the heterogeneous pebble composition the exact values vary from sorting batch to sorting batch — typical conglomerates of premium Brazilian provenance achieve bulk densities of around 2,700 kg/m³, compressive strengths of 130-180 MPa, flexural strengths of 10-15 MPa and water absorption of 0.2-0.5 %. Mohs hardness lies at 6-7 (depending on the dominant pebble composition). This makes the stone acid-resistant (unlike marble), resistant to cutting and scratching, frost-resistant and well suited to heavily used applications — including external façades, pool coping and staircases. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar or acidic sanitary cleaners leave no conspicuous etch marks.

Bookmatched laying of the polished slabs is a particularly effective application — the mirror-set clasts produce Rorschach-like symmetrical wall murals.

Compared with the classic Brazilian granites, Marinace Gold brings a completely different material character with its unique conglomerate feel — this stone is not a classic granite but a natural stone statement of a special kind. Compared with the Swiss Vert de Salvan (Permian conglomerate from the Valais), Marinace Gold is markedly more intense in colour with a clearer clast definition and a more colourful palette — Vert de Salvan stays greenish and restrained, while Marinace Gold appears dramatic with golden yellow, pink and black accents. Finishes

Marinace Gold is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Satin-honed

The satin surface is created by brushing, which selectively removes softer minerals and gives the surface a slight depth. A matte appearance with subtle light reflection and a warm feel to the touch. Easy to maintain, insensitive to scratches and suited to everyday use — a popular alternative to a polish in modern kitchens and living spaces.

Polished, reverse satin-honed

A slab usable on both sides: a polished face side with the highest possible colour intensity and mirror gloss, the reverse satin-finished (brushed) with a matt, tactilely warm appeal. A flexible construction for applications in which gloss and matt sides are wanted depending on the installation setting.

Care & fabrication

As a Brazilian conglomerate, Marinace Gold is a robust hard rock with low water absorption (typically 0.2-0.5 %), good acid resistance and a Mohs hardness of 6-7. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no conspicuous etch marks as they do on marble or limestone — the stone is markedly easier to maintain and well suited to intensive everyday use.

For internal applications we recommend a silane- or polysiloxane-based sealer at first installation. On polished surfaces, depending on use, 5-10 years may pass between sealer refreshes; on heavily used surfaces or external applications, check every 2-3 years. Sealing protects against deep penetration of oil, grease and pigments — otherwise discolouration can show on the lighter pebbles, while the black groundmass visually conceals soiling.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually sufficient. Acidic cleaners are unproblematic in principle, but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the sealer. For kitchen worktops, Marinace Gold can be used with reservations — the stone is technically suitable for everyday use (acid-resistant, scratch-resistant), but the heterogeneous clast structure can lead to uneven wear on the surface under intensive cutting, and individual clasts can show minimal micro-chipping under very sudden impact loads. For classic kitchen worktops we recommend a more homogeneous hard stone such as Tropical Black or Verde Maritaca; Marinace Gold is intended primarily as a statement material for bar counters, fireplace surrounds and expressive wall surfaces.

For external applications, with its low water absorption Marinace Gold is frost-resistant and stable against weathering over the long term. It can be used for external façades, pool coping and external terraces — on surfaces heavily exposed to UV the heterogeneous conglomerate structure can show minimal colour changes over the decades, because the various pebbles react differently to UV radiation.
