Marinace Nero

Marinace Nero is the black version of the classic Brazilian Marinace conglomerate from the Ibotirama quarry area in Bahia — a Precambrian coarse clastic rock with a dense packing of rounded clasts in a dramatically dark composition: black, dark grey and anthracite-bronze clasts contrast with pale white marble and quartz clasts in a warm black-grey matrix. Sister material to the warm red Marinace Rosso from the same quarry complex (Fazenda Merces). Internationally also traded as Nero Marinace, Granito Marinace Nero and Black Marinace; used for maximally expressive statement bar counters, designer kitchen islands, bookmatched wall claddings, fireplace surrounds, vanity tops and unique artistic settings with the highest recognition value and a dramatically dark material effect.

Marinace Nero is petrographically a Precambrian metamorphic conglomerate (a coarse clastic rock) — a sedimentary natural stone of rounded pebble clasts in a fine-grained matrix, consolidated by metamorphosis. In the international trade the material is listed within the hard rock family and classified as “granite”, because in fabrication and mechanical properties it is handled like a classic hard stone. About Marinace Nero

Marinace Nero shows one of the most visually unmistakable slab appearances in the worldwide natural stone range — the black version of the famous Brazilian Marinace family. The slab shows a dense packing of rounded pebble clasts in varying sizes (from a few millimetres to several centimetres across) in a dramatically dark composition: dominant are black, dark grey and anthracite-bronze clasts, complemented by luminous white marble or quartz clasts as visual points of contrast, with subtle golden or bronze accents in some of the darker clasts. The clasts are embedded in a warm black-grey fine-grained matrix that holds the whole composite together. The effect is astonishingly like natural gravel from a streambed cast into a dark matrix — but it came about naturally over hundreds of millions of years through sedimentation, consolidation and subsequent metamorphism. On a polished surface the stone develops an exceptional, dramatic depth — the individual clasts show their own mineral structure (some with fine veining, others with a crystalline gleam, some with grained structures) and the dark matrix contrasts with the pale clasts. Every slab is a unique piece — with Marinace Nero it is particularly worth making the selection from actual slabs, because the clast distribution varies strongly from block to block and every slab yields a different 'geological still life'.

Geologically, Marinace Nero is a Precambrian metamorphic conglomerate (coarse clastic rock) — a clastic sedimentary rock that originally formed in a streambed or an alluvial fan. The individual clasts were originally rolled stones of various origins (granite, quartzite, marble, dark slate), gathered by flowing water in the Precambrian river system, rounded and finally consolidated in a mineral matrix. The sediment was then metamorphically overprinted by pressure and heat, which welded clasts and matrix together permanently. The quarry area lies at Ibotirama in the Brazilian state of Bahia — the same region as the sister material Marinace Rosso (which comes from Fazenda Merces near Novo Horizonte, likewise in Bahia). Both materials belong to the extended Marinace conglomerate family, but differ dramatically in colouring. In international trade the synonyms Nero Marinace, Granito Marinace Nero, Black Marinace, Marinace Black and occasionally Black Pebble Marinace are in circulation.

Technically Marinace Nero shows strong values: bulk density 2,900 kg/m³ (exceptionally high — typical for conglomerates with dark, mineral-rich clasts), water absorption 0.5 % (low), good compressive and flexural strength, Mohs hardness 6–7. Full acid resistance is confirmed for it as a silicate rock — wine, lemon juice, vinegar or sanitary cleaners leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone. This makes Marinace Nero fully everyday-capable for demanding interior applications, including intensively used designer kitchen worktops and statement wall claddings.

Compared with the sister grade Marinace Rosso (the warm red version with terracotta-red and burgundy clasts), Marinace Nero is the dramatically dark version with black and anthracite clasts — for architectural projects with a cool, dramatic character rather than a warm, expressive effect. Both Marinace versions have the same geological conglomerate structure and similar technical properties — the choice is an aesthetic decision between warm (Rosso) and dramatically dark (Nero). Within the family of conglomerate natural stones traded worldwide, Marinace is one of the best-known Brazilian grades with a long track record in the market. Related conglomerate counterparts are the Italian Ceppo (markedly paler and more acid-sensitive) and a few rare African conglomerate grades. Finishes

Marinace Nero is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Satin-honed

The satin surface is created by brushing, which selectively removes softer minerals and gives the surface a slight depth. A matte appearance with subtle light reflection and a warm feel to the touch. Easy to maintain, insensitive to scratches and suited to everyday use — a popular alternative to a polish in modern kitchens and living spaces.

Care & fabrication

As a Brazilian metamorphic conglomerate, Marinace Nero is a robust hard stone with low water absorption (0.5 %), full acid resistance and solid compressive and flexural strength. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — the stone is considerably easier to look after and well suited to intensive everyday use.

For interior applications we recommend a silane- or polysiloxane-based impregnation at first installation. On polished surfaces, depending on use, a refresh every 5–8 years is enough; on heavily used kitchen worktops or bar counters, check every 2–3 years. The impregnation protects against deep penetration of oil, grease and pigments — with the heterogeneous clast-and-matrix structure, discolouration can otherwise show up particularly on the lighter white marble or quartz clasts.

Day-to-day care is done with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually enough. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the impregnation. For kitchen worktops and bar counters Marinace Nero is well suited: cut-, scratch- and heat-resistant (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods, but longer heat exposure above 200 °C should still be avoided), acid-resistant and with good stain repellency. The expressive clast structure conceals small marks of use remarkably well. When choosing the slab edge, bear in mind that with very sharp internal corners (for instance at cut-outs for basins) the heterogeneous clast structure can lead to micro chipping — a slight chamfer or rounding of the internal edges is more sensible here than a classic right-angled edge.

For exterior applications we recommend a project-specific data sheet check of the frost resistance before ordering. For large-area bookmatch installations, manual slab selection on site at the importer is particularly worthwhile — the clast distribution has to harmonise from slab to slab so that the mirrored large-scale motif reads coherently.
