About Portoro Brown

Portoro Brown lives from dramatic contrast: a dark brown to chocolate base tone through which light white to gold-coloured veins run — some fine and straight, others powerful and with flowing movement. The slab appearance is expressive and unmistakable, almost like an architectural version of the famous Italian Portoro marbles, here in warm brown instead of classic black. It is precisely this pictorial effect that makes the stone interesting for bookmatched wall surfaces, bathrooms, fireplace claddings and prestige interiors in which the material is meant to act as the lead player.

Care & fabrication

Portoro Brown is an acid-sensitive limestone. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave etch marks on the polished surface — visible as matt shadows or a loss of gloss. On dark brown surfaces such changes are visually particularly conspicuous.

For all applications, a silane or polysiloxane-based sealer is obligatory. It prevents the penetration of water, oil and dyes and reduces staining — but it does not remove the acid sensitivity. On polished surfaces we recommend refreshing the sealer every 1-2 years.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid vinegar, citric acid, descalers and abrasive products. Wine, coffee, oil, lemon and cosmetic products should not be left to act on polished surfaces for long.

For kitchen worktops, Portoro Brown is only conditionally suitable — acids from everyday cooking can leave a visible patina. Anyone who loves the dramatic material appearance but needs a carefree kitchen should choose a brown quartzite.

For permanently weathered external surfaces the material is not suitable.

Is Portoro Brown suitable for kitchen worktops?

With reservations. With good strength values the stone is technically capable, but as an acid-sensitive limestone it remains markedly more demanding than granite, quartzite or ceramic. Patina has to be accepted; sealing and the immediate removal of acids are obligatory.

Where does Portoro Brown come from?

Portoro Brown comes from Chinese deposits. Characteristic is the dark brown base colouring with high-contrast white to gold-coloured veins — a warm version of the classic Portoro look.

How do I clean and care for Portoro Brown?

A sealer is obligatory. Daily care with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a microfibre cloth. Avoid vinegar, citric acid, descalers and abrasive products. Wipe off wine, coffee or oil immediately.

Is Portoro Brown frost-resistant and suitable for outdoor use?

For permanently weathered external surfaces, Portoro Brown is not suitable — as a limestone the material reacts sensitively to de-icing salt and acidic precipitation. Indoors it is stable over the long term given proper care.

Portoro Brown or Italian Portoro — which suits better?

Both have similar care requirements as acid-sensitive limestones. Through its warm brown base tone, Portoro Brown appears more homely; the classic Italian Portoro markedly cooler and more dramatic with a black base tone and golden veins. For warm interiors, Portoro Brown is the better choice.

What does Portoro Brown cost?
