About Silver Wave
Silver Wave is one of the most spectacular Chinese marbles in the international stone world and has been among the most sought-after statement materials for high-quality interior architecture since the 2010s. The stone is won in Chinese marble quarries and marketed under several parallel trade names — Silver Wave, Black Wood Vein and Zebra Black are the most important designations, all of which describe the same, visually unmistakable material. The designation “Black Wood Vein” refers to the essential feature of the material's signature: parallel running, undulating silver-white veins that draw across the black slab surface like wood grain or flowing water.
Geologically it is a crystalline metamorphic marble that formed from an original limestone under high pressure and high temperatures, developing its characteristically banded foliation in the process. The black base colour derives from embedded organic substances, fine pyrite components and carbon-bearing sediment components — typical of carbonate sediments deposited under low-oxygen conditions and later metamorphosed. The light silver-white vein markings are calcitic layers or later calcite-filled zones of weakness that trace the metamorphic foliation of the rock. The undulating, almost wood-grain-like movement pattern of the veins arises from the differing degrees of folding and deformation of these layers during the metamorphic history of the rock. Like all carbonate marbles, Silver Wave is acid-sensitive and reacts to citric acid, vinegar, wine or acidic cleaners with matt etching — a sensitivity that stands out visually all the more because of the high black-and-white contrast. Polished surfaces are not stable in the long term in openly weathered external situations; internal applications are the core field of use.

Polished
Polishing is the most classic finish for marble and limestone — a glossy surface with the highest possible colour intensity and a pronounced depth to the veining. Depending on the mineral composition, the effect can be matte-gloss in places. Acid-sensitive — wine, lemon and vinegar leave etch marks after prolonged contact.
Satin-honed
The surface is brushed — softer minerals are selectively removed, creating a subtle depth and a matte appearance. Strongly veined limestones in particular gain a characterful look and feel this way. The more matte finish conceals small etch marks better than a polish and stands up better to everyday use on heavily used interior surfaces.
Care & fabrication
As a Chinese marble, Silver Wave is acid-sensitive — acidic foods such as lemon juice, vinegar, wine, cola and fruit juices, as well as acidic cleaners, cause matt etch marks that become particularly clearly visible on the black high-gloss surface. In wall and feature surface use this sensitivity is unproblematic, but on bar counters, in bathrooms and especially on kitchen worktops it must expressly be taken into account. For daily cleaning use only warm water with a pH-neutral stone cleaning product; aggressive household cleaners, abrasive sponges and microfibre products with an abrasive action are absolutely to be avoided. Take up spilt acidic liquids immediately with clear water. A professional sealer after laying and then every 1 to 2 years is strongly recommended — it reduces the take-up of pigments and protects the material surface against water droplet rings. On the black base colour, water droplets and cleaning streaks are visually particularly conspicuous, which is why clean, lint-free cloth material should be used when wiping. For wall claddings, regular dusting and occasional wiping with a damp cloth is sufficient.
