Today's Egyptian limestone quarries produce a variety of warm cream-beige grades, of which Sandy Creek counts among the well-known representatives. On the international market the stone is carried in parallel as Sandy Creek Limestone (in the English-speaking market, emphasising the petrographic classification), Sandy Creek Marble (English-language marketing as a polishable carbonate rock) and Egyptian Sandy Creek (a designation of origin).
Geologically this is a sedimentary limestone formed by the deposition of shell and skeletal fragments of marine micro-organisms in a former shallow, warm tropical sea. Sandblasted
The surface is blasted with quartz sand at high pressure and evenly roughened — the surface stays level, but it feels rough to the touch. The colour appears less intense than on polished variants. Slip-resistant and frost-resistant — for outdoor areas, paving and steps with a requirement for sure footing.
Satin-honed
The surface is brushed — softer minerals are selectively removed, creating a subtle depth and a matte appearance. Strongly veined limestones in particular gain a characterful look and feel this way. The more matte finish conceals small etch marks better than a polish and stands up better to everyday use on heavily used interior surfaces.
Honed C120
Matt appearance created by coarse honing with a C120 grit — the level surface shows a more restrained colour intensity than polished; light honing marks are possible. Slightly more maintenance-intensive than polished, but more scratch-resistant. A characterful choice for modern interior architecture with reduced reflection.
Sandblasted + satin-honed
The surface is roughened by sandblasting and then brushed — this creates a level surface with a softer feel than sandblasted alone. The colour appears restrained and the texture is slip-resistant. Sawn
A special finish in which the slab receives no further treatment after sawing — level, but rough to the touch, with a matt, technical appearance. Care & fabrication
As an Egyptian limestone, Sandy Creek is acid-sensitive and should be cared for attentively. Indoors, use exclusively warm water with a pH-neutral stone cleaning agent for daily cleaning — acidic household cleaners, vinegar, citric-acid descalers or other acidic substances cause matt etched patches that can only be reversed by professional re-polishing or re-grinding. Take up spilled acidic liquids promptly with clean water. A professional impregnation after laying and then every 1 to 2 years is recommended indoors and mandatory outdoors — it decisively reduces water absorption, protects against freeze-thaw damage and mitigates the take-up of pigments (red wine, coffee, olive oil). On the warm cream-beige ground tint, strongly colouring substances such as red wine or tomato sauce can leave smaller discolourations if left to act for longer — a proper impregnation minimises this risk. In the bathroom, water droplets should be squeegeed off after showering. With pool surrounds, alongside the impregnation it is important to keep an eye on chlorinated splash water: strong chlorine can cause local lightening. Road salt in winter must be avoided on exterior surfaces without exception. Exterior applications should primarily be carried out in a structurally protected way (under a canopy, with plinth protection).
