About Sapphire Brown
Sapphire Brown is a classic Indian gneiss from the Kazipet quarrying area in the Warangal district of the southern Indian state of Telangana (formerly part of Andhra Pradesh). In the market the material is traded under the main names ZEPHYR RED, SAPPHIRE BROWN and SAPHIR BROWN. Characteristic is a coarse-grained, non-directional mineral texture with a warm brown to red-brown ground effect — in their slight shimmer the brown to red-brown feldspar crystals recall the depth of a sapphire, hence the trade name. Interspersed black biotite zones and pale grey quartz accents give the slab picture a high-contrast, lively material effect. Geologically, Sapphire Brown is a Precambrian gneiss from the southern Indian deep-metamorphic belt — the Kazipet/Warangal quarrying region in Telangana is a hard rock producing region rich in tradition and supplies a family of related brown and blue gneisses to the European market. Gneisses form through high-pressure and high-temperature metamorphism of old granitic parent rocks; here the foliation is less pronounced than in many other gneisses — the material shows a predominantly non-directional mineral arrangement. In the international stone trade, gneisses are consistently assigned to the hard rocks and traded under “granite”. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.
Care & fabrication
As an Indian gneiss, Sapphire Brown can be maintained over the long term and cleaned without difficulty. With a water absorption of 0.2–0.35 percent the material is among the dense hard rocks — stains accordingly form only rarely. An impregnation on a silane or polysiloxane basis after laying gives additional protection against strongly colouring substances such as red wine, coffee, oil and tomato sauce. Daily cleaning with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth or mop. Avoid strongly alkaline deep cleaners, acidic products such as vinegar or lemon cleaners, and abrasive steel wool. Outdoors frost-resistant and tolerant of de-icing salt — rinse off de-icing salt residues in spring. Refresh the impregnation every three to five years.
