About Super Grey

Super Grey lives from a calm, elegant grey material effect with an unusually even fine-grained structure — the trade name 'Super' refers to the exceptional consistency and quality of the mineral distribution. The ground tone is a balanced mid grey with subtle cool undertones, evenly interspersed with fine-grained black biotite points, whitish-cream plagioclase feldspar speckles and occasional silver-grey mica accents. The almost isotropic (non-directional) distribution makes Super Grey a particularly calm and consistent stone — no dramatic veins, no flowing direction of movement, but a timeless architectural evenness. On a polished surface the stone develops a classic grey granite gloss effect with subtle light reflections from the pale mineral areas — perfect for modern architecture with a classic, restrained claim.

Geologically, Super Grey is a Precambrian granite from the quarries around Celina in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo — confirmed by DNSA under entry #5195 (CELINA GREY) as a very fine-grained, largely non-directional granite. The mineral composition is classically granitic: high proportions of plagioclase and potassium feldspar, supplemented by quartz, biotite and hornblende. DNSA lists SUPERGREY and SUPER GRAY as trade names for Celina Grey, likewise AMPARO and WINDSOR GREY as alternative trade designations. In international trade the material is marketed under several synonyms: Super Grey, Supergrey, Super Gray, Celina Grey, Celina Grey Granite, Amparo and Windsor Grey. Espírito Santo is one of the world's most productive regions for Brazilian granites — related classic materials such as Aracruz Black, Mystic Grey and other granite trade stones come from this region. Technically, Super Grey shows excellent values for a Brazilian granite. The bulk density lies at 2,690 kg/m³ (typical of medium granites), the compressive strength at 200 MPa, the flexural strength at a considerable 25 MPa (very high — about twice as high as with a classic granite) and the water absorption at a low 0.25 %. The Mohs hardness lies at 6-7. The stone is therefore acid-resistant, resistant to cutting and scratching, frost-resistant and outstandingly suited to heavily loaded applications. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar or acidic sanitary cleaners leave no etch marks. The high flexural strength supports heavy structural loading and cantilevered slab sections.

Compared with classic Brazilian grey granites such as Cinza Grey, Super Grey brings a somewhat finer-grained and more even mineral distribution with a higher technical performance (flexural strength 25 MPa vs. 17 MPa). Against Spanish grey granites such as Gris Perla (a Galician granodiorite with a coarser grain), Super Grey is markedly finer-grained and cooler in its ground tone. Finishes

Super Grey is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Honed C120

A matt appearance created by coarse honing with C120 grit — the level surface shows a more restrained colour intensity than polished and can carry visible honing marks. Compared with a polish it is more maintenance-intensive but stylistically calmer; the preferred choice for modern interior architecture with reduced reflection.

Care & fabrication

As a Brazilian granite, Super Grey is an exceptionally robust hard rock with a low water absorption (0.25 %), good acid resistance and a Mohs hardness of 6-7. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they do on marble or limestone.

For interior applications we recommend an impregnation on a silane or polysiloxane basis at first installation. On polished surfaces, depending on use, 5-10 years can lie between refreshings of the impregnation; on heavily used kitchen worktops or exterior applications, check every 2-3 years. Impregnation protects against the deep penetration of oil, grease and pigments — on the mid grey ground mass, discolourations can otherwise show up visibly.

Day-to-day care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clean warm water is usually enough. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the impregnation.

For kitchen worktops Super Grey is outstandingly suited: resistant to cutting and scratching, insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods; longer heat exposure above 200 °C should nevertheless be avoided), acid-resistant and with good stain repellency. The high flexural strength (25 MPa) supports cantilevers and longer unsupported slab sections. The mid grey ground tone conceals small crumbs and wipe streaks moderately well — on kitchen surfaces we recommend consistent daily cleaning. For exterior applications Super Grey is, with its low water absorption, frost-resistant and weather-stable over the long term — ideally suited to exterior façades, terraces, stairs and pool areas. For pool surrounds, exterior terraces and fountain surrounds a slip-inhibiting textured surface is mandatory — on smooth exterior surfaces there is a high risk of slipping when wet. In areas with frequent salt contact (road salt, pool chlorine) we recommend an additional annual refreshing of the impregnation.

How do I clean and care for Super Grey?

As a granite, Super Grey is very easy to care for: daily care with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a microfibre cloth is enough. We recommend impregnation at first installation; for interior applications, depending on use, a refresh interval of 5-10 years, and on heavily used kitchen worktops or outdoors, check every 2-3 years. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used. Dry cleaning with a soft microfibre cloth after damp mopping is advisable.

Super Grey or Cinza Grey — which fits better?

Both are Brazilian grey granites, but with a subtly different character. Cinza Grey shows a somewhat coarser mineral distribution with more distinct white feldspar clusters and more balanced effects of light. Super Grey (Celina Grey) is markedly finer-grained and more even with a more consistent mineral distribution — confirmed by DNSA as 'very fine-grained' and 'largely non-directional'. Super Grey moreover has the higher flexural strength (25 MPa vs. 17 MPa). For a classic, coarse granite character, Cinza Grey; for premium fine-grained consistency with a higher performance, Super Grey.

What does Super Grey cost?

The price depends on the batch, thickness, surface finish and fabrication — with natural stone there is no serious flat rate per square metre. Business customers see prices once their B2B account is activated; private customers receive a complete quote through a fabricator near them.
