About Transylvania Coral
Transylvania Coral comes from the quarry district around the municipality of Băbeni in the province of Sălaj in north-western Transylvania — a historic region of Romania with a long stonemasonry tradition. The Romanian quarries of this region have been producing increasingly for the western European natural dimension-stone market since the late 20th century and position themselves with characterful, attractively priced building limestones as an eastern European alternative to the classic Mediterranean variants. The marketing name “Transylvania Coral” refers to the historically appealing region of origin and to the coral-rich fossil material signature; the parallel designations Karina Coral, Karina Flourish, Karina Deep Coral and Transylvania Deep Coral come from the supplier and brand programme of the main Romanian producer and are synonymous trade names for one and the same, or closely related, material.
Geologically it is a sedimentary limestone that formed in a former tropical shelf sea through the deposition of shell and skeletal fragments of marine organisms, in particular of corals, fossil bivalves and other reef dwellers. The fossil-rich material character with clearly recognisable coral fragments lends the stone a lively, characterful appearance — on closer inspection one recognises the cross-sections of fossil coral colonies, bivalve shells and finer biogenic components in the denser carbonate matrix. The designation “Coral” refers directly to this coral-rich fossil character. In the stone trade, Transylvania Coral is classified as a limestone — in accordance with the international convention for medium-strength sedimentary carbonate rocks.
Visually, Transylvania Coral is marked by a calm, elegant, warm grey-beige material signature. The base shade moves within the warm grey spectrum with beige and cream-beige accents, interspersed with light calcite inclusions and the characteristic fossil coral and bivalve fragments. The individual variants differ in tonality — from cool grey (Coral Grey) through medium warm (Coral Beige) to intensely warm versions (Deep Coral) with a hint of salmon beige to coral pink. Slab variation is moderate — all variants show the characteristic fossil material character, while individual slabs vary in fossil density and colour intensity. The finishes available from stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down.
Technically, Transylvania Coral shows the values of a medium-strength eastern European Mediterranean limestone: bulk density between 2600 and 2650 kg/m³, compressive strength 58.1 MPa, flexural strength 6.1 MPa and water absorption of about 1.1 to 1.55 %. These values qualify it for demanding internal applications and moderate external applications with structural protection and consistent sealing. The comparatively low compressive strength of 58 MPa is typical of softer reef limestones and should be taken into account when choosing the application — for intensive floor loading with high point loads, denser hard rocks are to be preferred. Like all carbonate rocks, Transylvania Coral is acid-sensitive and reacts to citric acid, vinegar or acidic cleaners with matt etching — external applications in fully weathered situations are to be regarded with reservation, and structurally protected applications are the right choice.
In interior fit-out, Transylvania Coral is a calm, characterful choice for Mediterranean-inspired, classically warm and eastern European architectural schemes. Classic applications are floor surfaces in entrance halls and living spaces, wall claddings, stair treads, skirtings, window sills and bathrooms. The warm grey-beige tonality with its fossil coral accents creates a calm, elegant atmosphere and harmonises with timber fittings in warm tones, with brass and bronze accents as much as with clear white and muted earth tones. Outdoors it finds use as a façade cladding, plinth slabs, stairs beneath a canopy, fireplace surrounds and fountain surrounds — usable in Central European climate conditions given proper sealing and structural protection from open weathering. Pool surrounds are possible with consistent sealing and beneath a canopy; for openly weathered horizontal paving with freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing salt exposure, denser hard rocks are the more robust alternative.

Transylvania Coral is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.
Satin-honed
The surface is brushed — softer minerals are selectively removed, creating a subtle depth and a matte appearance. Strongly veined limestones in particular gain a characterful look and feel this way. The more matte finish conceals small etch marks better than a polish and stands up better to everyday use on heavily used interior surfaces.
Care & fabrication
As a limestone, Transylvania Coral is acid-sensitive and should be cared for carefully. Indoors, use only warm water with a pH-neutral stone cleaning product for daily cleaning — acidic household cleaners, vinegar, citric acid descalers or other acidic substances cause matt etched patches that can only be reversed by professional repolishing. Take up spilt acidic liquids promptly with clear water. A professional sealer after laying, and then every 1 to 2 years, is recommended indoors and obligatory outdoors — it decisively reduces water absorption, mitigates the take-up of pigments (red wine, coffee, olive oil) and protects against discolouration. In the bathroom, water droplets should be squeegeed off after showering, since standing water on unsealed spots can lead to discolouration over the long term. With pool surrounds, besides sealing it is also important to bear chlorine-bearing splash water in mind: strong chlorine can cause local lightening. De-icing salt in winter is absolutely to be avoided on external surfaces — chloride-free de-icing agents are the gentler alternative. External applications should primarily be executed with structural protection (beneath a canopy, with plinth protection).
Frequently asked questions
Where does Transylvania Coral come from?
Transylvania Coral is won in the quarry district around the municipality of Băbeni in the province of Sălaj in north-western Transylvania — a historic region of Romania. The Romanian quarries of this region have been producing for the western European natural dimension-stone market since the late 20th century and position themselves with characterful, attractively priced building limestones as an eastern European alternative to the classic Mediterranean variants.
What does the designation “Coral” in the trade name mean?
“Coral” refers to the coral-fossil-rich material character of the stone — on closer inspection one recognises the cross-sections of fossil coral colonies, bivalve shells and finer biogenic components in the carbonate matrix. Geologically, Transylvania Coral formed through the deposition of shell and skeletal fragments of marine organisms including corals in a former tropical shelf sea. The designation therefore describes the palaeontological character of the stone, not a strong coral-red colouring.
What do the parallel trade names such as Karina Coral or Karina Flourish mean?
Karina Coral, Karina Flourish, Karina Deep Coral, Transylvania Coral, Transylvania Deep Coral and Transylvania Coral Grey/Beige are synonymous or closely related trade names from the supplier and brand programme of the main Romanian producer and supplier. The parallel designations mostly denote the same or closely related variants from the same quarrying region — the choice of the specific trade name depends on the supplier's marketing and on the target market.
Is Transylvania Coral suitable for external applications?
With reservation and consistent sealing. External applications should primarily be executed with structural protection — beneath a canopy, with plinth protection, on sheltered façade sides. For pool surrounds under a roof, stairs beneath a canopy and plinth details, the stone is usable in Central European climate conditions given proper sealing. For openly weathered horizontal paving with freeze-thaw cycles and de-icing salt exposure, denser, frost-certified hard rocks are the right choice.
Is Transylvania Coral suitable for kitchen worktops?
With reservations. The acid sensitivity to lemon juice, vinegar, wine and cola as well as the comparatively low compressive strength of 58 MPa make the stone less suitable for intensively used family kitchens. Anyone who accepts the characterfully ageing limestone aspect gets an elegant Mediterranean work surface; anyone wanting a stain-free surface should prefer acid-insensitive hard rocks such as granite or quartzite.
Which slab formats are usual for Transylvania Coral?
Standard large formats from the Romanian quarries typically lie between 240 × 130 cm and 280 × 160 cm in thicknesses of 2 cm and 3 cm. Special thicknesses (1 cm for lightweight wall claddings) as well as skirtings and tile formats for floor surfaces can also be sourced through ROSSITTIS.
What does Transylvania Coral cost?
The price depends on the batch, thickness, surface finish and fabrication — with natural stone there is no serious flat rate per square metre. Business customers see prices once their B2B account is activated; private customers receive a complete quote through a fabricator near them.
