About Trigaches Vergado

Trigaches Vergado owes its name to its appearance: “vergado” means “striped” or “veined” in Portuguese and describes the characteristic vein pattern of this marble. The ground tone moves between a medium grey and silver-grey shadings, run through by fine, horizontally flowing vein lines in a darker grey and with whitish accents. The slab picture looks calm and legible in design terms — no expressive play of veining, but a restrained, atmospheric movement that works very coherently on large surfaces. It is precisely this legibility that makes the stone interesting for floor areas, wall claddings, stairs, bathrooms and reduced interior architecture.

Geologically, Trigaches Vergado is a metamorphic marble from Portuguese deposits in the Alentejo, one of the most significant natural stone regions of Portugal. Specifically, the material is quarried at the Herdade do Monvestido quarry in São Brissos, in the district of Beja in the southern Alentejo. The region has produced high-quality marbles for centuries — the original sedimentation reaches back into the Cambrian period, and metamorphism and tectonic folding created the striped structure that is characteristic today.

Technically, Trigaches Vergado behaves like a classic polished marble: bulk density 2,710 kg/m³, compressive strength 84.0 MPa, flexural strength 11.1 to 13.1 MPa, water absorption 0.16 %. The fine-grained, dense structure allows a very good polish. Chemically the stone remains acid-sensitive: wine, lemon juice, vinegar or acidic sanitary cleaners leave etch marks on the material surface. With its low water absorption the material is fundamentally suitable for exterior applications — openly weathered polished exterior surfaces, however, lose gloss over the years.

Compared with classic Italian grey marbles such as Bardiglio or Pietra Serena, Trigaches Vergado brings a distinctive Portuguese striped look with it — less cloudy, more horizontally linear in its structure. Compared with more expressive grey marbles with a dramatic vein pattern, the slab picture remains calm and flexible in planning terms. For modern, reduced interior architecture with a subtle material effect, Trigaches Vergado is a very fitting choice. Anyone looking for maximum acid resistance for a grey kitchen worktop is better served by a grey quartzite such as Luna Grey.

Finishes

Trigaches Vergado is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish for marble and limestone — a glossy surface with the highest possible colour intensity and a pronounced depth to the veining. Depending on the mineral composition, the effect can be matte-gloss in places. Acid-sensitive — wine, lemon and vinegar leave etch marks after prolonged contact.

Care & fabrication

Trigaches Vergado is an acid-sensitive marble. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or limescale removers leave etch marks on the material surface — visible as matt shadows or a loss of gloss.

For all applications an impregnation on a silane or polysiloxane basis is obligatory. It prevents the penetration of water, oil and colourants and reduces staining — but does not remove the acid sensitivity. On polished surfaces we recommend refreshing the impregnation every 1-2 years, more often on heavily used floor areas.

Daily care is done with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid vinegar cleaners, cement haze removers, acidic sanitary cleaners and strongly alkaline products. Wine, coffee, oil, lemon juice or cosmetic products should not be left to act on polished surfaces for long — wipe off immediately and wipe over again with clear water.

For kitchen worktops, Trigaches Vergado is only suitable with reservations — acids from everyday cooking can leave a visible patina. Anyone who loves the calm grey material picture and accepts patina as character can use the material. Anyone who needs maximum everyday certainty should choose a grey quartzite such as Luna Grey.

Outdoors, Trigaches Vergado is frost-proof when properly laid to a fall. Use de-icing salt sparingly in winter — marbles react more sensitively to salt loading than hard rocks. The surface finishes available from stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down.
