Verde Eucalypto

Verde Eucalypto is a Brazilian pelitic granulite from Nova Venecia in Espírito Santo with a light green, creamy sage-green ground mass interspersed with black-anthracite biotite bands and characteristic pink-violet garnet speckles. Also carried internationally as Verde Eucalipto; used for kitchen worktops, bar counters, floor areas, wall claddings, exterior façades and prestigious interior and exterior surfaces with a natural green character.

Verde Eucalypto is petrographically a Precambrian pelitic granulite from Nova Venecia, Espírito Santo (DNSA #3919, mineral composition 45 % microcline, 25 % quartz, 20 % plagioclase, 5 % garnet, 3 % cordierite, 3 % sillimanite), but is carried in the trade as a granite.

About Verde Eucalypto

Verde Eucalypto lives from a naturally elegant green material effect with a fine-grained granulitic structure. The ground tone is a pale sage to eucalyptus green — the trade name 'Eucalypto' describes the tint precisely: like the fresh foliage of a eucalyptus tree, pale greenish with warm creamy undertones. Characteristic black-anthracite biotite bands are distributed across the slab surface in a flowing, loosely layered movement — a typical feature of pelitic granulites with their foliated metamorphic structure. Occasional burgundy-pink to violet garnet speckles set warm, luminous accents within the green composition — these garnet crystals are the visual identifying feature of pelitic granulites. To these are added fine-grained light grey to creamy microcline feldspar areas. On a polished surface the stone develops a bright, fresh effect of depth with subtle light reflections — a material for architecture that wants to combine natural Mediterranean freshness with elegant brightness.

Geologically, Verde Eucalypto is a Precambrian pelitic granulite from the Faz. Mangueira / Córrego São Geraldo quarry near Nova Venecia in the Brazilian state of Espírito Santo — confirmed by DNSA under entry #3919. DNSA classifies the rock unambiguously as a granulite (a high-grade metamorphic mixed rock formed at extreme pressures and temperatures above 700 °C in deep crustal levels). The mineral composition is classically pelitic (aluminium-rich): 45 % microcline feldspar (responsible for the pale greenish ground mass), 25 % quartz, 20 % plagioclase, 5 % garnet (the pink-violet accents), 3 % cordierite (an additional greenish tint) and 3 % sillimanite. The foliated metamorphic structure (layered, directional) is a typical feature of granulitic rocks. In international trade granulite is carried within the granite family; Verde Eucalypto also runs under the Italian spelling Verde Eucalipto. At ROSSITTIS we classify Verde Eucalypto in the customary trade manner as a granite. Brazil's Espírito Santo region is one of the world's most productive quarry regions for pelitic granulites — related materials such as other Verde stones and granulitic Kashmir and Madura versions come from the quarries there.

Technically, Verde Eucalypto shows excellent values for a Brazilian granulite. The bulk density lies at 2,630 kg/m³, the compressive strength at 168 MPa (even 182 MPa after freeze-thaw cycle loading — a sign of exceptional weather stability, similar to Cafe Bahia), the flexural strength at 19.3 MPa and the water absorption at a low 0.18 %. The porosity is 0.48 %, the coefficient of thermal expansion 0.67 mm/m/100K, the abrasion resistance to the Italian standard 1.20. The Mohs hardness lies at 6-7. DNSA explicitly confirms acid resistance, frost resistance and the durability of the polish outdoors — a particularly valuable property. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar or acidic sanitary cleaners leave no etch marks. DNSA classes Verde Eucalypto as 'occasionally used in Germany' and expressly recommends it as a floor covering.

Finishes

Verde Eucalypto is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Care & fabrication

As a Brazilian granulite, Verde Eucalypto is a robust hard rock with a low water absorption (0.18 %), acid resistance and frost resistance confirmed by DNSA, and the particularity that the compressive strength even rises slightly after freeze-thaw cycle loading (168 → 182 MPa). Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they do on marble or limestone.

For interior applications we recommend an impregnation on a silane or polysiloxane basis at first installation. On polished surfaces, depending on use, 5-10 years can lie between refreshings of the impregnation; on heavily used kitchen worktops or exterior applications, check every 2-3 years. Impregnation protects against the deep penetration of oil, grease and pigments — on the pale sage-green ground mass, discolourations can otherwise show up visibly.

Day-to-day care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clean warm water is usually enough. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the impregnation. For kitchen worktops Verde Eucalypto is very well suited: resistant to cutting and scratching, insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods; longer heat exposure above 200 °C should nevertheless be avoided), acid-resistant as confirmed by DNSA and with good stain repellency. The pale sage-green surface conceals small crumbs and wipe streaks moderately well — on kitchen surfaces we recommend consistent daily cleaning. With the low water absorption (0.18 %) and a compressive strength that even rises slightly after freeze-thaw loading, the stone is fully weather-stable — ideally suited to exterior façades, terraces, stairs and pool areas.

For pool surrounds, exterior terraces and fountain surrounds a slip-inhibiting textured surface is mandatory — on smooth exterior surfaces there is a high risk of slipping when wet. In areas with frequent salt contact (road salt, pool chlorine) we recommend an additional annual refreshing of the impregnation.
