About Vermion White

Vermion White is a marble with recognition value: across a white to grey-white base tone run fine, parallel grey lines that look like wood grain — hence the international trade name “Greek White Wood Marble” and the Chinese 希腊白木纹 (Greek white wood grain). Unlike marbles with a clouded figure such as Bardiglio or Calacatta, Vermion White lives from a clear, almost linear stripe structure that makes the slab appearance flexible in planning terms. In bookmatch laying, dramatic, almost textile patterns of mirrored stripes emerge — a very strong bookmatch look. For modern bathrooms, wall claddings, floor surfaces, stairs and prestige interior fit-outs this is a distinctive, readily legible choice of material.

Geologically, Vermion White is a metamorphic marble from the Vermio mountains in the Imathia region near the town of Veria in Central Macedonia (northern Greece). The region has produced high-quality marbles since antiquity — Vermion White is one of the modern variants of this tradition. On the international market the material also runs under the trade names Greek White Wood Marble, Veria White Marble, Lefkon White Marble, Veria Stripes Marble and Striped Lefkon. The parallel stripe structure arises through the metamorphic folding of the original carbonate layers — the fine grey lines are former clay mineral beds from the time of sedimentation.

Technically, Vermion White shows unusually strong values for a marble: bulk density 2,680 kg/m³, compressive strength 102.62 MPa, flexural strength 37.24 MPa (markedly higher than with many other marbles), water absorption of only 0.02 %. The high flexural strength and the very low water absorption make the material technically more capable than most white marbles — permanently frost-proof and very well suited to external applications. Chemically the stone remains acid-sensitive: wine, lemon juice, vinegar or acidic sanitary cleaners leave etch marks on the material surface.

Compared with classic Italian white marbles such as Bianco Carrara, Vermion White appears markedly more linear and more modern through its parallel wood grain — not a clouded play of veins, but a clear, almost graphic structuring. Against the Greek Thassos marble (very calm, almost pure white), Vermion White brings more movement and material character. With its striped look it is a very distinctive choice for modern interior architecture that seeks a calm but recognisable marble.

Finishes

Vermion White is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish for marble and limestone — a glossy surface with the highest possible colour intensity and a pronounced depth to the veining. Depending on the mineral composition, the effect can be matte-gloss in places. Acid-sensitive — wine, lemon and vinegar leave etch marks after prolonged contact.

Care & fabrication

Vermion White is an acid-sensitive marble. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave etch marks on the material surface — visible as matt shadows or a loss of gloss. With a stone this light, such changes are visually particularly conspicuous.

For all applications, a silane or polysiloxane-based sealer is obligatory. It prevents the penetration of water, oil and dyes and reduces staining — but it does not remove the acid sensitivity. We recommend refreshing the sealer every 1-2 years. On light marble the sealer is doubly important: a single drop of olive oil or red wine that seeps through can remain as a permanent dark stain.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid vinegar cleaners, cement haze removers, acidic sanitary cleaners and strongly alkaline products. Wine, coffee, oil, lemon juice or coloured cosmetic products should not be left to act on polished surfaces for long — wipe off immediately and wipe over with clear water.

For kitchen worktops, Vermion White is only conditionally suitable — acids from everyday cooking can leave a visible patina. Anyone who loves the iconic wood-grain material appearance and accepts patina as character can use the material. Anyone who needs maximum everyday security should choose a light quartzite such as Chantilly.

Outdoors, through its water absorption of only 0.02 %, Vermion White is exceptionally frost-proof — permanently capable given proper laying with a fall. The finishes available from stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down.

Is Vermion White suitable for a kitchen?

With reservations. As an acid-sensitive marble with high compressive strength (102.62 MPa) and unusually high flexural strength (37.24 MPa), Vermion White is technically capable, but remains chemically sensitive. As a kitchen worktop it works only where patina is accepted, sealing is consistent and acids are removed immediately. For carefree light kitchen worktops we recommend a light quartzite such as Chantilly.

Yes, with only 0.02 % water absorption, Vermion White is exceptionally frost-proof and very well suited to external applications — including pool surrounds. Freely weathered polished external surfaces do, however, lose gloss over the years; for external applications we recommend a matt, textured surface finish.

Vermion White or Bianco Carrara — which suits better?

Both are acid-sensitive white marbles with similar care requirements. Bianco Carrara from the Apuan Alps typically shows a clouded, soft grey veining — the classic Renaissance marble. Vermion White has a markedly more linear, wood-grain-like stripe structure — more modern and more flexible in planning terms. For classic interiors, Bianco Carrara; for modern bookmatch applications with a graphic effect, Vermion White.
