Virginia Black is a deep black American hard stone with a fine-grained, slightly clouded appearance. At ROSSITTIS it is used for grave installations, façade details, window sills, stairs and selected kitchens, where a calm black granite with a classic effect is wanted.

About Virginia Black

Virginia Black belongs to those black hard stones that work not through glitter or strong texture but through calm. The stone appears deeply dark, fine in grain and slightly clouded, without achieving the absolute uniformity of a Nero Assoluto. That is precisely where its character lies: it is not perfectly smooth and monolithic, but shows a certain life on closer inspection. For grave installations, window sills, steps, façade details and selected interior applications, that is a very coherent mixture of gravitas and naturalness.

The material comes from Virginia in the USA and is traded on the market as a black granite or hard rock. Petrographically it is more precisely a gabbro. For practical purposes the trade classification as granite nevertheless makes sense, because the stone is specified, fabricated and compared in exactly that context. Against Star Galaxy or Labrador types, Virginia Black appears considerably calmer and more restrained.

Finishes

Virginia Black is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Satin-honed

The satin surface is created by brushing, which selectively removes softer minerals and gives the surface a slight depth. A matte appearance with subtle light reflection and a warm feel to the touch. Easy to maintain, insensitive to scratches and suited to everyday use — a popular alternative to a polish in modern kitchens and living spaces.

Care & fabrication

Virginia Black is easy to care for, but should nevertheless be impregnated on kitchens, washstands and polished dark surfaces. That reduces staining risks and makes cleaning easier.

pH-neutral natural stone cleaners are suitable for cleaning and care. On black surfaces, limescale, greasy films and soap residues should be removed regularly so that no dull veils remain visible.

Strongly abrasive agents and aggressive specialist chemicals are unnecessary. The material is robust, but the surface, edges and joints reward matter-of-fact care.

Outdoors, chemical questions matter less than drainage, choice of surface finish and sound construction. Dark stones in particular then look considerably better over the long term.
