Multicolor Guayana

Multicolor Guayana is an exceptionally expressive Precambrian migmatite of the granite trade family from Ciudad Guayana in the Venezuelan state of Bolívar, with a warm terracotta-red groundmass, finely distributed white plagioclase flecks and dramatic black biotite clouds in an irregular flowing structure of movement. Internationally also traded as Rojo Guayana, Gran Guayana and Multicolor Guayana Granite; used for exterior façades with a lasting polish, statement wall claddings, floor areas, stairs, bar counters, window sills, skirtings, pool coping and project-specific cutting to size.

Multicolor Guayana is petrographically a Precambrian migmatite — a metamorphic hybrid rock type from the Guayana Shield of Venezuela. In the international trade the stone is traditionally listed as “granite”, because in fabrication it is handled like a classic hard stone. About Multicolor Guayana

Multicolor Guayana shows an exceptionally expressive slab character with a high, contrast-rich liveliness. The ground tone is a warm terracotta-red to old-rose, raspberry-coloured groundmass, run through by numerous fine white to creamy plagioclase feldspar flecks and articulated by dramatic black biotite-rich bands and irregular cloud structures. The black areas flow in irregular patterns across the slab and create the typical migmatitic picture of movement — not a geometric striping but an organic, painterly distribution of the light and dark mineral zones. Here and there, small black hornblende dots and subtle yellowish cream-coloured feldspar accents add further depth to the otherwise warm red composition. On a polished surface the stone develops an exceptional depth — the red zones intensify dramatically, the white plagioclase flecks shimmer like sparks in a field and the black biotite clouds stand out plastically. Every slab is a unique piece — with Multicolor Guayana it is particularly worth making the selection from actual slabs, because the distribution and intensity of the black structure of movement vary strongly from block to block.

Geologically, Multicolor Guayana is a Precambrian migmatite from the Guiana Shield — one of the oldest rock provinces on Earth, several billion years old and part of the vast South American craton. The quarry area lies near Ciudad Guayana in the Venezuelan state of Bolívar, where the Caroní joins the Orinoco. Petrographically the stone is a migmatite — a metamorphic hybrid type in which pale quartz- and feldspar-rich melt layers (leucosome) alternate with dark biotite- and amphibole-rich residual zones (melanosome). The red areas derive from potassium feldspar (microcline/orthoclase) with a high iron oxide content, fixed in its intense red colouring by high-grade metamorphism. Petrographically it is a migmatite (plutonic rocks); in the trade the stone is classified as a granite. Technically Multicolor Guayana shows exceptionally strong values: bulk density 2,665 kg/m³, compressive strength 240.2 MPa (very high), flexural strength 14.5–17.8 MPa, water absorption 0.17–0.22 % (extremely low), abrasion resistance 0.04 (Italian standard — very hard), Mohs hardness 6.5–7. The stone is expressly frost-resistant, acid-resistant and capable of holding a polish outdoors. This makes Multicolor Guayana fully everyday-capable for the most demanding interior and exterior applications, including large-area exterior façades with the polish permanently retained — a rare property that not all red granites have.

Compared with classic red Scandinavian granites such as Rosso Balmoral (a Finnish rapakivi granite, evenly fine-grained with a clear flecked structure), Vanga Red (a Swedish granite) or Imperial Red (an Indian granite with stronger black mineral dots), Multicolor Guayana brings a markedly more expressive, more animated slab appearance with its characteristic migmatitic cloud structure. Compared with other red migmatites from the Guayana region such as Multicolor Bolívar (with somewhat darker zones), Multicolor Cardenal (with purple accents) or Rojo Caribe (with a calmer composition), Multicolor Guayana is the most balanced version, with a clear terracotta-red ground tone and a dramatic black structure of movement. Finishes

Multicolor Guayana is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Flamed + brushed once

The surface is roughened by heat and brushed once to smooth sharp-edged mineral residues and remove loose material. The feel is somewhat gentler than purely flamed, it remains slip-resistant, and the colour is less intense than polished. The standard choice for outdoor areas, terraces and heavily used floor areas.

Care & fabrication

As a Venezuelan migmatite, Multicolor Guayana is an exceptionally robust hard stone with low water absorption (0.17–0.22 %), confirmed frost and acid resistance (DNSA) and very high compressive and flexural strength. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — the stone is considerably easier to look after and ideally suited to intensive everyday use.

For interior applications we recommend a silane- or polysiloxane-based impregnation at first installation. On polished surfaces, depending on use, a refresh every 8–10 years is enough; on heavily used kitchen worktops or in exterior applications, check every 3–5 years. The impregnation protects against deep penetration of oil, grease and pigments — on the heterogeneous migmatite surface, discolouration can otherwise show up particularly on the pale plagioclase areas.

Day-to-day care is done with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually enough. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used, because they can attack the impregnation. For kitchen worktops Multicolor Guayana is outstandingly suited: cut- and scratch-resistant, insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods, but longer heat exposure above 250 °C should still be avoided), acid-resistant and with excellent stain repellency thanks to its low water absorption. The expressive, animated surface conceals small marks of use remarkably well. The surface finishes available from stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down.

For exterior applications Multicolor Guayana is particularly well qualified: the DNSA-confirmed durability of the polish outdoors (polish durable outdoors) means that polished exterior surfaces retain their full gloss for years — a property that not all red granites have. For pool surrounds, outdoor terraces and fountain enclosures, a slip-inhibiting textured finish is mandatory — on smooth exterior surfaces there is a high risk of slipping when wet. In areas with frequent salt contact (de-icing salt, pool chlorine) we recommend an additional annual impregnation refresh. The warm red ground tone stores solar energy in hot climate zones — for pool areas in the south, combine it with locally cooled irrigation if necessary.
