Sandstone from Albania

Pietra di Tahir

Pietra di Tahir is an Albanian sandstone with a pale grey base tone and a fine, granular mineral sediment structure. A restrained, elegant dimension stone with a calm natural stone atmosphere for wall cladding, floor surfaces, external façades and warm Mediterranean interior architecture. The sandblasted, satin-honed treatment gives the material a pleasantly matt character.

About Pietra di Tahir

Pietra di Tahir is an Albanian sandstone. Albania is a less well-known but decidedly productive dimension stone province in the south-western Balkans — the Albanian mountain regions show extensive sedimentary and metamorphic deposits, which have increasingly been distributed internationally over the past few decades.

Geologically this is a clastic sedimentary rock whose original sand grains were bonded into a solid dimension stone by cementation during diagenesis. The pale grey tonality arises from a lower iron oxide content and a predominantly quartzitic grain composition.

Finishes

Pietra di Tahir is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Sandgestrahlt+satiniert

Pietra di Tahir is a sandstone with moderate acid sensitivity.

Daily cleaning: soft cloth or soft mop, clear water and a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner.

Do not use: acidic cleaners, descalers, abrasives.

Sealing: directly after installation and, depending on loading, advisable every 12–18 months.

Façade and external application: frost-capable with correct installation including drainage. Use de-icing salt sparingly in winter.

Repair: scratches and dull patches can be evened out by professional re-honing.

Frequently asked questions

Where does Pietra di Tahir come from?

From Albanian sandstone deposits. Albania is a less well-known but decidedly productive dimension stone province in the south-western Balkans.

Is Pietra di Tahir suitable for external applications?

Yes, very much so with the sandblasted, satin-honed treatment. The surface offers outstanding slip resistance and is frost-capable with correct installation.

Which thicknesses are available?

In ROSSITTIS stock we carry 20 mm and 30 mm thickness.

Pietra di Tahir or Pietra di Liguria?

Both are pale Mediterranean sandstones with a similarly calm tonality. Pietra di Tahir comes from Albania, Pietra di Liguria from Italy (or the Spanish “type PDT” variant). Which choice suits depends on the desired tonality and material provenance.

Is Pietra di Tahir suitable for the kitchen?

Possible, but not the first choice. As a sandstone it is moderately acid-sensitive. It is better suited to wall applications and external architecture.

How much material do you currently have in stock?

We currently carry 13 raw slabs of Pietra di Tahir in 20 mm and 30 mm thickness.
