About Royal Black
Royal Black is a classic black gabbro from Belgaum (today Belagavi) in northern Karnataka — one of the most significant producing regions for black hard rocks in southern India. In the market the material is also traded under the trade names Belgaum Black or Royal Black Granite — all designations refer to the DNSA-confirmed Indian gabbro (entry #6012). Characteristic is a fine- to medium-grained salt-and-pepper texture with deep black biotite and hornblende crystals alternating with white to pale grey plagioclase and quartz fields; the slab picture shows a calm, evenly patterned mineral arrangement with no pronounced patterns of movement. Geologically, Royal Black is a Precambrian gabbro from the southern Indian plutonic belt — the Belgaum/Belagavi region in Karnataka is among the most tradition-rich producing regions for black hard rocks in India and has supplied the European and North American markets for decades. Gabbros form through the slow solidification of basaltic magmas at greater depth in the Earth's crust — mineralogically, plagioclase and pyroxene dominate, with a fine-grained crystalline texture. In the international stone trade, gabbros are consistently assigned to the hard rocks and traded under “black granite”, because they behave technically like classic hard granites. An important distinction: Chinese (Inner Mongolia, SC s9329) and Australian (SC s5357) materials also exist in the market under the name “Royal Black” — these are different stones. The technical values are classic hard rock values at a solid level: high compressive strength, low water absorption markedly below 0.5 percent, frost-resistant to DIN EN 12371, fully acid-resistant within the normal range of application. This makes Royal Black suitable without restriction for demanding exterior and interior applications — including in Central European climate zones with hard winters and de-icing salt loading. The DNSA documents the material as “available, occasionally used in Germany”. Compared with classic Indian black hard rocks such as Steel Grey, Royal Black is higher in contrast with a more distinct salt-and-pepper texture; compared with South African Nero Impala or Zimbabwean Nero Assoluto Zimbabwe, the mineral variety is finer-grained and the slab picture livelier.

As an Indian gabbro, Royal Black is easy to care for and clean over the long term. With its low water absorption and full acid resistance the material is very robust in everyday use — wine, lemon juice, vinegar or carbonated drinks leave no etch marks. An impregnation on a silane or polysiloxane basis after laying gives additional protection against strongly colouring substances such as red wine, coffee, oil and tomato sauce. Daily cleaning with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft microfibre cloth. Avoid strongly alkaline deep cleaners and abrasive steel wool.
