Imperial-Kerala Green is a classic Indian migmatite, established for decades, from the quarrying area around Trivandrum (also Thiruvananthapuram) in the south Indian state of Kerala — one of the most important Indian dimension stone provinces. Kerala produces an exceptional variety of green migmatite and gneiss selections known internationally as “Indian green granites”, and Imperial-Kerala Green is one of the most frequently exported selections. On the international market the stone is traded under several parallel names: Imperial-Kerala Green, Kerala Green, Tropical Green, Jade Green and Imperial Green. Geologically it is a Precambrian migmatite from the Indian Shield — a metamorphic rock formed by the partial melting of Precambrian basement under high pressure and high temperature and its subsequent resolidification. In the stone trade, Imperial-Kerala Green is traditionally listed as a granite — the convention established on the international market for high-strength exotic hard rocks. Migmatites show alternating granite-like and metamorphic banding — in Imperial-Kerala Green these appear as irregularly clouded structures with a moss to sage-green main mass, shot through with characteristic burgundy-red to copper-brown garnet mineral points and black biotite bands. As an Indian migmatite from the granite family, Imperial-Kerala Green is decidedly easy to look after. Indoors, warm water with a pH-neutral stone cleaning product is sufficient for daily cleaning; aggressive household cleaners, descalers containing citric acid and abrasive sponges are unnecessary and should be avoided. On polished kitchen worktops we recommend sealing after installation and every 2 to 3 years thereafter, with a solvent-based sealer suitable for darker hard rocks, in order to reduce the uptake of oil, grease and intensely coloured foods over the long term. With the green material signature, pale pigment traces are less visible than on light-coloured stones — the robustness typical of granite makes the stone an easy-care choice for intensive everyday applications. Soiling should be wiped up promptly, ideally within a few hours. Outdoors, regular cleaning with clear water and occasionally a soft brush is sufficient; where green growth occurs in shaded positions, proprietary algae and moss cleaners can be used. Hot pans can be set down directly on the worktop — Imperial-Kerala Green is heat-resistant. De-icing salt in winter does the stone no harm and can be used.
