Imperial White Premium is an Indian gneiss from the Tippu district in northern Tamil Nadu with a pale ivory-cream groundmass and finely distributed, directional black biotite and hornblende minerals as well as occasional delicate pink-brown accents. Also carried internationally as Tippu White, Imperial White or Imperial White Granite; used for calm pale wall and floor surfaces, stairs, window sills, skirtings, external façades and project-specific cutting to size.

About Imperial White Premium

Imperial White Premium shows a very clear, pale ivory-cream base tone with finely distributed, slightly directional black mineral zones of biotite and hornblende that run in fine strokes and dots across the slab surface. Here and there, delicate pink-brown accents set subtle warm points of light. The overall material effect is calm and even — the stone reads like a pale, lightly textured background surface rather than an expressive statement material. On a polished surface the pale groundmass develops a silky gloss with discreetly increased depth; the black accents remain evenly finely distributed and are not distractingly dominant. Compared with fuller white-grey selections such as River White, Bianco Romano or Colonial Cream, Imperial White Premium shows an altogether calmer, almost pointillist slab image with a clear pale character.

Geologically, Imperial White Premium is a Precambrian gneiss from the Tippu district in north-western Tamil Nadu in India, near Madras (Chennai). The quarries lie in the Edappadi–Salem area — a region known for the production of pale Indian granites and gneisses. The stone is listed in the DNSA dimension stone database under two records: DNSA 4601 (IMPERIAL WHITE / TIPPU WHITE, petrographically classified as gneiss) and DNSA 4718 (the same stone, the same quarry, with the customary trade designation as granite). Both DNSA entries give identical technical data. In international trade the material is also carried as Tippu White, Imperial White or Imperial White Granite. At ROSSITTIS we classify Imperial White Premium in the customary trade manner as a granite, because in fabrication the material is handled like a typical Indian hard stone and is fully acid-resistant.

Technically, Imperial White Premium shows the typical values of a medium to high-quality Indian hard stone: bulk density 2,620 kg/m³, compressive strength 165.6 MPa, flexural strength 22.1 MPa, water absorption 0.31 % and thermal linear expansion 0.33 mm/m/100K. According to DNSA the stone is frost- and acid-resistant — both expressly confirmed. Imperial White Premium is therefore fully practical for everyday internal and external applications, including kitchen worktops, bathrooms, wall and floor surfaces and external façades.

At ROSSITTIS we carry Imperial White Premium as a raw slab for pale wall and floor surfaces, stairs, window sills and bar counters, in tiles for floor and wall applications, as tread and riser, skirting and for project-specific cutting to size. Thanks to its low water absorption and frost resistance the stone is also ideally suited to external façades. Typical slab thicknesses range from 8 mm (for tiles) through 13 and 20 mm (standard thicknesses) to 30, 40 and 61 mm (for solid applications such as bar counters or solid steps). Important for differentiation: several completely different stones are also carried under the name 'Imperial White' or similar — Imperial White Marble (Mugla, Turkey, a calcitic marble), Danby Imperial (Vermont, USA, a marble) and Colonial White (Rajasthan, India, a different hard stone type). None of these stones is related to the Tamil Nadu gneiss described here. When ordering we recommend always using the designation Imperial White Premium or Tippu White together with the origin Tamil Nadu / Tippu / Edappadi. Compared with the classic Indian white granite selections Imperial White Standard, Madras White or River White, the Premium selection shows a particularly pale, even groundmass with finely distributed mineral accents and belongs to the selected upper quality grade within the Tippu quarries.

Care & fabrication

As an Indian gneiss, Imperial White Premium is a robust hard stone with low water absorption (0.31 %), Mohs hardness 6–7 and full frost and acid resistance. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone — the stone is considerably easier to maintain and is ideally suited to intensive everyday use.

For internal applications we recommend a silane- or polysiloxane-based sealer at first installation. On the pale groundmass, sealing is particularly important, because oil, grease and coffee stains can otherwise settle more visibly on pale stones. On polished internal surfaces, renewal every 5–8 years is sufficient; on heavily used kitchen worktops or external applications we recommend a check every 2–3 years.

Daily care is carried out with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually sufficient. Acidic cleaners are unproblematic in principle, but should nonetheless not be used, because they can attack the sealer. For kitchen worktops, Imperial White Premium is well suited: cut- and scratch-resistant, insensitive to heat (hot pots and pans can be set down directly for short periods, but prolonged heat exposure above 200 °C should still be avoided), acid-resistant and with good stain repellency thanks to the low water absorption. The pale groundmass does, however, show a greater tendency to stain than dark granite classics such as Nero Assoluto or Star Galaxy — you should react promptly to sauces, red wine or turmeric. For external applications, Imperial White Premium is weather-stable in the long term thanks to its low water absorption and the DNSA-confirmed frost resistance. The finishes available from stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down.

For pool surrounds, external terraces and fountain surrounds, a slip-resistant textured finish is essential — smooth external surfaces present a high risk of slipping when wet. In areas with frequent salt contact (de-icing salt, pool chlorine) we recommend an additional annual refresh of the sealer. The pale base tone stores considerably less solar energy than dark granites, which makes the stone a pleasantly heat-restrained choice for external surfaces in hot climate zones.
