Viscont White

Viscont White is an Indian granite from the quarries around Madanapalle in Andhra Pradesh and Tiruchchirappalli in Tamil Nadu, with a creamy white to light grey groundmass shot through with characteristic black biotite speckles and subtly undulating lines of mineral movement. Internationally it is also traded as Viscount White, Madanapalle White, White Tapestry and under numerous spelling variants; used for kitchen worktops, bar counters, floor areas, wall claddings, exterior façades and prestige interior and exterior surfaces with a classic, timeless pale character.

About Viscont White

Viscont White lives from a light, calmly elegant material effect with a classic 'white granite' character and subtle undulating mineral movement. The ground tone is a creamy pale white to light grey, evenly shot through with black biotite mica speckles and fine mid-grey microcline and plagioclase mineral zones. A subtle wave-like flowing direction of movement runs across the slab surface — the pale groundmass shows delicate tapestry-like flow lines that give the composition depth and natural liveliness (hence the trade name 'White Tapestry' for one grading variant). Isolated light beige to cream-coloured accents in the lighter areas round off the warm overall picture. On a polished surface the stone develops a bright, luminous depth with subtle light reflections — perfect for modern white kitchens with a classical aspiration.

Geologically, Viscont White is a granite from several quarry regions in southern India — above all from the quarries around Madanapalle in Chittoor district in Andhra Pradesh and from Tiruchchirappalli in Tamil Nadu. The mineral composition is classically granitic: high proportions of plagioclase feldspar (responsible for the pale groundmass), quartz, potassium feldspar as well as biotite and hornblende for the black accents. In international trade the material runs under numerous spelling variants and synonyms — the German spelling 'Viscont' and the English 'Viscount' are used synonymously, joined by Viskont, Viscon, Visconte, Wiscount, Wiskont and further variants. Geographical designations such as Madanapalle White Granite, Madanapally White, White Tapestry and Viscont White Wavy are also widespread. At ROSSITTIS we classify Viscont White as a granite in line with trade practice. Important for identification: there is an entirely different Chinese stone from Tibet (Tibet White / Shanshui White) that also uses the trade name 'Viscount White' — at ROSSITTIS this is exclusively the classic Indian Viscont White, not the Chinese version.

Technically Viscont White shows solid values for an Indian granite. Bulk density is 2,652 kg/m³, compressive strength 131.68 MPa, flexural strength 13.59 MPa and water absorption a low 0.33 %. Mohs hardness is 6-7. This makes the stone acid-resistant (unlike marble or limestone), cut- and scratch-resistant, frost-resistant and well suited to heavily used applications. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar or acidic sanitary cleaners leave no etch marks. The fine-crystalline structure and the high plagioclase content also make the stone very receptive to polishing — on a polished surface the pale ground tone develops a luminous brightness that makes it a popular choice for classic white kitchens.

Compared with classic Indian white granite classics such as Kashmir White (with stronger burgundy-red garnet accents) or Ivory White (purely creamy white), Viscont White offers the characteristic white-grey middle way with subtle undulating lines of movement — a balanced choice between pure white and expressive statement granite. Compared with Brazilian white quartzites such as Mont Blanc Calacatta, Viscont White is finer-grained and more uniform across the slab, without dramatic veining. Finishes

Viscont White is available in a range of finishes. The finish affects appearance, feel and the care it needs.

Polished

Polishing is the most classic finish in the hard stone segment — a mirror-smooth, high-gloss surface with the highest possible colour intensity and maximum depth effect in the mineral structure. As an acid-resistant silicate stone, polished granite is easy to care for and the first choice for kitchen worktops, wall claddings and prestigious exposed surfaces.

Satin-honed

The satin surface is created by brushing, which selectively removes softer minerals and gives the surface a slight depth. A matte appearance with subtle light reflection and a warm feel to the touch. Easy to maintain, insensitive to scratches and suited to everyday use — a popular alternative to a polish in modern kitchens and living spaces.

Honed C120

A matt appearance created by coarse honing with C120 grit — the level surface shows a more restrained colour intensity than polished and can carry visible honing marks. Compared with a polish it is more maintenance-intensive but stylistically calmer; the preferred choice for modern interior architecture with reduced reflection.

Flamed + brushed once

The surface is roughened by heat and brushed once to smooth sharp-edged mineral residues and remove loose material. The feel is somewhat gentler than purely flamed, it remains slip-resistant, and the colour is less intense than polished. The standard choice for outdoor areas, terraces and heavily used floor areas.

Care & fabrication

As an Indian granite, Viscont White is a robust hard rock with low water absorption (0.33 %), good acid resistance and Mohs hardness 6-7. Wine, lemon juice, vinegar, cola, sanitary cleaners or descalers leave no etch marks as they would on marble or limestone.

For interior applications we recommend a silane- or polysiloxane-based impregnation at first installation. On polished surfaces, depending on use, 5-10 years may pass between impregnation refreshes; on heavily used kitchen worktops or in exterior applications, check every 2-3 years. The impregnation protects against deep penetration of oil, grease and pigments — otherwise discolouration can show visibly on the pale groundmass, which matters especially with Viscont White because of its light ground tone.

Day-to-day care is done with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a soft cloth or microfibre mop. Clear warm water is usually enough. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used. The surface finishes available from stock are listed in the »Finishes« block further down.

For kitchen worktops Viscont White is outstandingly suited: cut- and scratch-resistant, insensitive to heat, acid-resistant and with good stain repellency. Unlike white marbles such as Carrara, Viscont White does not react to wine, lemon juice or vinegar — an easy-care alternative to classic marble. The pale ground tone does, however, conceal small crumbs and wipe streaks less well than a dark stone — on kitchen surfaces we recommend consistent daily cleaning. For exterior applications, with its low water absorption Viscont White is frost-resistant and stable in the long term under weathering — ideally suited to exterior façades, terraces, stairs and pool areas. For pool surrounds, outdoor terraces and fountain enclosures, a slip-inhibiting textured finish is mandatory — on smooth exterior surfaces there is a high risk of slipping when wet. In areas with frequent salt contact we recommend an additional annual impregnation refresh.

How do I clean and care for Viscont White?

As a granite, Viscont White is very easy to look after: day-to-day care with a pH-neutral natural stone cleaner and a microfibre cloth is enough. We recommend impregnation at first installation; for interior applications a refresh interval of 5-10 years depending on use, and for heavily used kitchen worktops or exterior use a check every 2-3 years. Acidic cleaners are in principle unproblematic, but should nevertheless not be used. Wipe streaks are visible on the pale surface — drying off with a soft microfibre cloth after damp mopping is advisable.

Viscont White or Kashmir White — which fits better?

Both are pale Indian granites from southern India, but with clearly different character. Kashmir White shows a cooler white-cream ground tone with characteristically stronger burgundy-red garnet speckles — more striking and more expressive. Viscont White brings a more balanced white-grey ground tone with subtle black biotite speckles and an undulating direction of movement — calmer and more classic.
